DVR Motion Detection vs "Real" Motion Detector

Recommended Posts

I'd like to use a DVR and cameras to monitor the outside of the house and set it up so that it dings/chimes/etc when motion is detected. My question is about the motion detection capabilities on today's DVRs... Are they reliable enough to take the place of my alarm system's motion detectors? Can they be set up to avoid getting multiple false alarms daily? I know you can block out areas of the camera so that they're ignored... is that enough to make these things work reliably?

NO they are not. Most DVRs/NVRs/IP cameras use pixel based motion detection so ANY changes in the video are seen as motion. So you will have many many false positives. I would not recommend using pixel based motion detection for what you are trying to do. But you could use your motion detectors on the trigger inputs to trigger your DVR to record and this will be much more reliable.

A good PIR Motion Detector will always be FAR superior! For critical applications I would only ever use a real PIR detector. I've used many from DSC and they are awesome!

Now if you just want to know when people are in your driveway so you can peek out the window (or similar situations), video-detection may be fine.
