Xtech 0 Posted January 4, 2012 Hello everyone, It might be a simple question... I always use 1 twisted pair CAT5 for data RS485 (green), but I just wonder if I use 2 twisted pair for each polarity (Ex. orange pair for TX+, green pair for TX-), will it go further than a single twisted pair? Also, what cable do you think is the best for RS485? Most of people use CAT5, some use alarm wire or phone wire... but which cable goes further and it's more stable for transmitting data? Thank you for your answer in advance,

Soundy 1 Posted January 4, 2012 ^+1, single pair is fine. RS422 or 485 is a balanced differential signal typically good to several thousand feet. I've run PTZs on 18/2 and station wire (two wires of 22/4) with just RS-232 for several hundred feet.
