Are there any 1 megapixel systems?

Recommended Posts

We are going to a 120m2 (1300ft2) stand-alone office and the company that owns the building wants us to make use of the Samsung SME 2220 system with 2x inside and 2x outside cams.

The image quality is not that good and everything is stored locally. Unfortunately the company that installs it is not a security company, but an installation company. They also install the lighting and electronics and we cannot change the company.

They are willing to change the system, but want us to provide an alternative. I have tried looking, but find it hard to find an alternative. So many brands and products, plus most of the are not sold in Europe. Also they do not seem to have an app to view the video on you tablet of mobile phone.

Any suggestions for a 1 megapixel system with at least 2x inside and 2x outside cams.

Okay, first of all, if you want to go to megapixel, you're looking at a completely different TYPE of system than what you've got now: analog will not do megapixel, and you need to go to a different transport mechanism, either network or SDI.

The Samsung DVR is stictly for analog cameras, so it's a throw away. You'll need either a PC with NVR software or an NVR (which is the IP version of a DVR).

There are many cameras available in Europe, for example Axis is made in Sweden, makes cameras in all price ranges from as low as $150 USD to thousands. Mobotix is made in Germany, cameras costs from about $800 USD to typically $1,500. There's several brands from Taiwan, I would recomend ACTi as a solid performer. Panasonic in Japan is also a big player with IP cams. Let us know which brands you have access too. Many of these cameras are not available in retail stores anywhere, you may have to buy from an online reseller.

Also, to recomend a camera, you need to tell us if you want A dome, bullet, box cam, fixed focal lenght or varifocal, IR cut filter or day only, built in illuminators or not, PTZ or not. Most importantly, your budget.

Thank you for your responses.

I can buy AXIS, MOBOTIX, Sony, JVC, Panasonic many other brands, but not ACTi.

Based on the area.

2x Outdoor camera's with infrared

2x Fixed corner (bullet) camera's

1 or maybe 2 domes

The budget is about 2.000 to 2.500 euro, if that is realistic.

you might just do your budget (trade) with some axis or vivotek. but then you have the cost of a PC.

if you are looking to get better images than what you have now ..... you can still use a analog system. your samsung is very basic with poor cameras

I was thinking of:

2x GeoVision GV-MFD220 - 2 Megapixel

1x Geovision GV-VD220D - 2 Megapixel

1x Compro NC450 - 2 Megapixel

1x Synology Disk Station DS212+

2x 1TB HDD

Total price would be around 2250 euro, excluding installation costs. This way we can access it from any office or home computer.

You'll need to have a PC as Tom said and NVR software or get an NVR device. To save money, I would get all the same brand because Geovision will give you the NVR software for free if you only use it with their brand cameras. Maybe a Geovision GL-BL220D or BL320D to replace the Compro. Also, depending on lighting, maybe you want a indoor dome with IR illuminators built in like the GV-FD220D instead, that way it works well in the dark. If you want to save money, get 1MP indoors, usually indoors the areas are small and 2MP may not be necessary, but outdoors, the more resolution the better because you are generally covering a larger area.

Also figure the cost of a PoE switch to power and connect the cameras. There are some inexpensive 8 port (4 PoE) switches for under $100 USD.
