thewireguys 3 Posted February 17, 2012 Why would I use this over a POE switch?
Soundy 1 Posted February 17, 2012 ^I was wondering the same thing...
ssmith10pn 0 Posted February 17, 2012 I have a few reasons. Existing non POE switch in place and just need power? Lets say you have 8 cameras going back to a closet where there is already a 48 port managed switch thats 50% full The IS department can't justify a 7000.00 48 port POE in this location and 8 injectors would clutter everything up. Is that a good reason?
thewireguys 3 Posted February 17, 2012 (edited) I just won a project where the other company spec'd these with d-link switches.... New projects I wouldn't use these but if the customer has non-POE switches then I would look at them but I would use anther company because they are a lot cheaper. ssmith10pn 0 Posted February 17, 2012 I didn't check the price. I have used PowerDsign before on AP roll outs.
Soundy 1 Posted February 17, 2012 Personally, I'd just use a separate PoE switch for the cameras. The Cisco model we normally use would be ideal: eight 10/100 PoE ports for the cameras, use of of the two GbE uplink ports to connect to the existing switch. 1U, half width, so it's actually half the size... NexTag search puts the injector at ~$300, which is a bit more than the switch goes for (NexTag lists the SFE-1000P at $250).
ssmith10pn 0 Posted February 18, 2012 Depends on the situation. My 2 big customers are not going to allow any other switches in their closets. One is an All Nortel/Avia house and the other is all Cisco 6400 Blades. In most cases there is POE in the closets but there are situations where there isn't and a multi port injector would be ideal. One has about 60 closets and the other has 42.
hardwired 0 Posted February 18, 2012 I've been using single port injectors from Phihong for a long time, with only a few failures. They also make quite a few different multiport midspans, I know they OEM for a lot of companies. http://www.midspans.com/
Soundy 1 Posted February 18, 2012 Single-port or even two-port can be handy for those one-off installs, but really, an injector for EIGHT cameras just seems like unnecessary complexity, not to mention unnecessary cost, especially when a PoE switch can be had for so much less.
