Switch question

Have a residence with 5 - ip cameras going in (1.3 megapixel), plus 2 access points.

Question is can I run all 7 devices with 1 POE switch that meets all power requirements, or is it better to run the access points from their own poe switch?

Does anyone have pros / cons about doing that?

Unless physical layout is aided by separate switches, there's no benefit to not just running everything off the one for that small number.

Less is more, meaning that one switch would be the preferred method in this case.

mainly because of more poe headroom, and because the 2nd switch has 2 gb uplink ports.

Do you think this is a good decision or am I going overboard...?

I like the first one unless you plan on expanding and using the uplink ports.

problems with first one are that

1. not enough ports. 5 cams plus 2 access points plus dvr and link to router is 9, that one only has 8.

2. no gb ports for dvr or link to router.

 

Isnt it always better to link to router and dvr through gb ports?

If your router only has 10/100 ports, there's no benefit to connecting it to a gigabit port. And unless your internet connection is over 100Mbit, there's no benefit to anything higher either.

 

I'd just leave the other GbE port in case you want to add a NAS for storage in the future

I'll use one GB port for my server and one to connect to my less capable D-link switches my PC's are one.

One thing to consider is noise. I prefer my gear to be silent. Just food for thought.

Yeah, my old-school Cisco SRW2008P sounds like a hovercraft. It drowns out 3 PCs and a UPS on the same stand. Fortunately, it's in an out-of-the-way location, but if burglars follow the noise, they'll go right to it.

 

I'm adding an inline resistor to slow down the fan next time I do any serious maintenance on the equipment stack.
