Linksys E2500 Router with Static IP- Questions

Recommended Posts

I have done my setup on my router and when I try to do a port forward check it comes back and says not reachable. Do I have to have the static ip set in router to do port forwarding? Also I am waiting on the ISP to provide the DG, SM, and DNS #'s. Been struggling with this for awhile now. I can view everything on site ok, but no luck off site. SO i am sure it has to do with the port forwarding. I am pretty sure I will need info from ISP before I can complete this job but I fig'd Id ask. THANKS in advance.

If your ISP has given you a static IP, you shouldn't need all those numbers - just leave your router's WAN port set for DHCP, and their server will give it those numbers.

"Static" doesn't really mean static in this case; it means they've reserved your IP address and it will always be assigned to your router's MAC address.

When I leave my router set to DHCP it assigns it totally different numbers than what they gave me. I would assume they should be the same as what they gave me but thats not the case. When I enter the numbers into the static ip settings and save I lose internet access. I think my ISP is giving me the wrong numbers or something.

It SHOULD be giving you the same numbers every time... if it's not, and if manually entering the numbers they told you, cuts off the connection, that indicates that they don't have your reserved IP set up right. You'll probably want to have words with your ISP.
