Installing network switch with POE outdoor

Recommended Posts

Customer wants 8 cameras mounted outside,30-40 feet away from the house. There is no existing conduit. Instead of drilling and patching for 8 locations through the wall, I am thinking of mounting the network switch outside in a weatherproof enclosure and running only one network cable and the power inside the house. Somebody else is doing the conduit. What do you guys think?

Alternatively, I can link all cameras together, bundle the cables and run them together in a single location through the wall.

If you can, run some extra cables as spares just in case something nibbles through the 'in-use' cable at some point down the line or something else happens.. It's cheap insurance if something happens down the road. I'll let others chime in on the main part of the question though..

I've done something similar, putting a switch in a weatherproof box out in the open... ran 24VAC to the box and then put in an adjustable regulator board to provide the switch its 5VDC power.

What PoE switch runs from 5VDC?

I'm considering something similar, and it would be very convenient if I could power a PoE switch off of the 24VAC that runs my enclosure heater and my Raymax.

Do it all the time.

One of these: http://www.aaxeon.com/products/industrial-ethernet/poe-switches/1348 powered by one of these: http://www.aaxeon.com/products/power-supplies/1676?v=48 (stepping 120vac down to 48vdc for the switch, which requires 48vdc), all mounted on a DIN rail inside of a weatherproof enclosure.

Alternatively this one: http://www.aaxeon.com/products/industrial-ethernet/poe-switches/1805 can run off 24vdc, I'm sure you could find something to convert 24vac to 24vdc.
