What do you do with your old DVR's?

Recommended Posts

If I collect any more "trade-in" DVR's from my clients, the TV show "Hoarders" is going to show up. I figured I would sell these to clients on a budget, but that isn't happening. When I mention "no smartphone viewing", nobody wants them.

These are/were high-quality DVR's at one time and in good working condition (I've even replaced a few hard-drives and upgraded firmware), but I can't give them away with a $100 bill taped to them.

Your suggestions are appreciated.

Put together some "bundles" with used cameras and sell them on fleaBay or Craigsh*ts. I actually put together a couple little packages like that, that I've used for "rentals" for temporary installs.

I'm thinking there must be plenty of people out there who do not have a buget for quality surveillance equipment and would love to have something (anything) instead of nothing. I think Soundy's idea is spot on, smartphone access or not. For people looking for the equipment you've got, they can score a great deal and you can deplete your old inventory.

As an example, I do alot of work on old POS systems, many of which are 10+ years old and the store owners do not have the budget to replace. The equipment is not produced anymore and new replacement parts are very expensive. Finding quality used parts can be a hassle, but I routinely look on Ebay and Craigslist for these old systems that I can use for parts. It's worked out great for me over the past few years.

Bottom line - there are buyers out there, but you need to advertise what you've got in order to find them.

I am sure there will be a market for used systems on both those auction sites. Of course, remove the $100 bills from them first (and send to me). Good luck shifting them hope you get a good price.
