ronwood 0 Posted May 7, 2012 I want to add a single 3 or 5 mega pixel IP camera to a building located approx. 800 feet away from my PC based NVR. The building does not have power & the cables (Cat5, etc) will have to be buried. All of my current cameras are 12v and powered by POE using a Cisco SG300-10MP switch. (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps5718/ps10898/data_sheet_c78-610061.html) I have one port/slot left on the switch. Is it possible to use my existing switch, with some type of booster or external power source? Budget is around $500, minus the camera. Any & all suggestions are welcome. camera-newbie 0 Posted May 7, 2012 http://www.passivepoe.com/faq.html POE (passive or active) according to the above FAQ can't exceed 300FT.. You might be able to send 24VAC on a separate cable to the far side and then convert that to 12vdc or similar.. I think there was a thread similar to this recently -- within the past month or so.. NotoriousBRK 0 Posted May 7, 2012 800 ft. is to far for *ethernet*, forget about PoE. You'll probably need/want to use some sort of distance extender product. There are units that can do data+power over coax or Cat5 at that distance, but even if the camera could run off a battery, you won't get a link over 800ft of Ethernet. Soundy 1 Posted May 8, 2012 Something like this, maybe - claims up to 1km for power and ethernet over RG6: http://gemelec.com/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=shop.flypage&product_id=704&category_id=68&manufacturer_id=0&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=
ronwood 0 Posted May 8, 2012 Has anyone had any experience using the Veracity Ethernet and POE over Coax converter? Will this work for my application & is a reliable product? http://www.veracityglobal.com/products/ethernet-over-coax/highwire-powerstar.aspx -Soundy, do you have any experience with the GEM Elec brand? I contacted the company & their rep didn’t know if it would work for my situation. Thanks to everyone, for the advice.

I contacted the company & their rep didn’t know if it would work for my situation. Not with their ethernet extenders, unfortunately - worked with a number of their balun and connector products and always found them a good value. Veracity is something of a pioneer in the field, so they're probably a good bet for this as well.
fa chris 0 Posted May 8, 2012 I've had good luck with Veracity's Highwire stuff, but haven't used it extensively or tested distance with it either. I'd give a shot for what you're doing though.
