IP Cam which streams

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I'm looking for either recommendations for a cheap cam (I'll be buying a few) where I can, with the help of some html or other code, stream directly to a website. Or someone to give me an idea of wat type of technology I should be looking for.

In essence setting something similar up to a webcam site... earthcam etc.

What I dont want is users connecting to a webcam/cctv GUI... just simply the stream.

I'm not well versed in the area, but way back in the day before reality TV hit, I used to stream a "life diary" where I had a webcam setup in my room and people could watch. No idea what was so special about me, but it caught on quick... Anyway, I used webcamxp to stream to a webpage with no need for logging in and support for multiple users..

I'm sure there are WAY more selection out there, but that's one that popped off the top of my head.

I would venture to say almost all of the popular brand IP cams - Vivotek, Axis, Acti, etc - all support streaming. It's probably best to find out which software you'll be using, and see their list of supported IP cams.

I've used WebcamXP before but hope things have moved on

Ideally I want no PC involved... I was hoping to use an IP cam and tap directly into the stream.

I'm confused here - where is the steam coming from? Is is coming from some sort of relay off the hosted website or directly from your steam out of the camera? If so, how much upstream bandwidth do you have? How big exactly are you looking at - 30FPS at 2MP or something like 3FPS at 40x480? Maybe you could provide more details?

Most any of the consumer level cams can achieve this. Check out the Panasonic BLC* series. They even provide sample HTML code for embedding the stream in your own page (the stream is fully configurable as well - size, frame rate, user control of pan/tilt, etc.) These cameras can be had for about $150+ on Amazon. Even many of the cheaper cams sold on eBay (and Amazon) can do this as well. Loftek, Foscam, EasyFN, etc. These are usually sub $100 cameras. A quick Google search will provide the stream information required for embedding in your own web page.
