newbie, need help with remote surveillance bad

hello,

 

I just recently purchased the swann dvr 4 net card and i can't get the remote surviellance to work. At first i thought it was because i was using xp home so i upgraded to xp pro, activated the IIS and reinstalled the dvr software. Now it still doesn't work. I am using a dlink router and forwarded the appropriate ports and firewalls are also forwarding appropriate ports. I am also using SBC dsl. When I boot up the dvr software, another program boots up (webserver) but it gives error saying that no connection. Please help, it is driving me crazy.

Check that your ISP will allow you to broadcast out on those ports you are using, suprisingly some block certain ports, especially webserving ports like 80 etc, I think they just don't want anyone hosting websites

I'm assuming you are able to surf the net with this system. No connection could possibly mean that you don't have any users connected. I haven't come across software that actually cares whether or not you have network connectivity. Try specifying a different port. This might seem like a silly question, but have you tried connecting to it from "inside" the router? If you can connect locally (not from the DVR itself, though) then you know it's a routing problem. If you can't then you know it's a DVR/setup problem.

It won't even connect locally. I haven't called swann tech support because they are in Australia but I have emailed them but their response time is kind of slow. What ports should can i use as alternatives then?

You can use pretty much anything over 2000. I've used 9090 in the past, but honestly, it doesn't matter which port as long as some other program isn't using it. Can you ping your dvr system locally to test for connectivity? keep in mind that if you use anything other than port 80, you will need to specify it in your browser. Let's assume your dvr has an IP address of 192.168.1.50, domain name of www.mydvr.com and using port 9090. In your viewing browser you will use http://192.168.1.50:9090 as your address locally and http://www.mydvr.com:9090 as your remote. Here the troubleshooting steps from another post.

 

Please note that on my DVR system you have to enable or start the remote view service. On my system it's off when I start up the system and I have to start it manually.

 

1) Verify network connectivity.

a) Start -> run -> cmd -> OK

b) type without quotes "ping xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" where the x is your IP address.

c) replys means good network, timed out means no network

 

2) Disable the firewall on both computers to rule out a firewall problem. This is for XP.

a) Right click My Network Place network select properties

b) Right click Local Area Network select properties

c) Click on Advanced -> Setttings -> Off -> Click OK -> Click OK

d) If you're using third party firewalls (Zone Alarm, Sygate, Symantec Security), you will need to disable those as well.

 

3) Repeat step 1. If you still get timed out, you need to work on getting your network up and running.

 

4) Add your ip addresses to the trusted lists. From IE tools -> Internet Options -> Security -> Trusted Sites -> Sites -> http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx (uncheck Require Server Verification) -> Click Add -> Click OK -> Click OK

 

5) Verify the ports that your DVR is using

 

6) Try connecting without ports http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx if that doesn't work try it with port specification http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:yyyy (y is port # make sure you have the : in there)

hello,

 

i got the internal to work now but i can't access it out of the network. It uses dynamic ip but i registered the ip with dyndns. The web address is frankiefung.gotdns.org port 8888. Any ideas what step to take next? Thanks.

For testing, I would skip using the domain name and just use the external IP address until you are sure it's working. Example:

 

http://111.222.333.444:8888/

 

If you don't know what it is, you can use http://www.whatismyip.com/

 

If you still can't get it working with the IP address, you probably have a routing problem. You'll need to setup port forwarding or an access control list on your router.

 

You could try the seting up your router to pass "pings" to the PC (instead of letting the router respond). If you can successfully ping from the outstide after doing this, then you know you're forwarding properly.

Forget that, I was using Firefox browser and it seems to only work with Internet Explorer. I can see both your cameras fine now.

i don't know what happened but it's working now, video is a tad slow but bearable. Thanks for all your guys input and help, I wouldn't have been able to do this without you guys. You guys are great, once again thank you.
