All kit mentioned so far is entry level and you usually get what you pay for. A high-end camera will perform better in demanding situations; e.g. night, strong sunlight.

Any reputable seller will stand over cameras with defective focus.

Viola DVRs work fine, but you need a little practice to use the mouse control. some have network capability and i prefer to connect to them with a PC.

QVIS do an entry level DVR a little easier to use than the Viola. Not sure if there is a price difference.

some examples may be:

domestic external; go for 600tvl, c/w 15M LEDs or better

Commercial general view; 600tvl (+ IR LEDs for external use)

Commercial high security; 2Megapixel IP or better

These cameras must be matched by suitable recorders (i.e for 600tvl cameras; analogue recorder with 250GB or better, networking if needed. for IP camera, speak your best local professional CCTV Installer to get the best out of the system. E.g. Dallmeier do a recorder which can mix'n'match various IP cameras)

Ensure there is enough lighting in the area day and night.

Wide Dynamic Range is a bonus on all cameras
