Remote & Mobile Access To DVR

Our DVR has a specific port specified by default for "Mobile Monitor".

 

Elsewhere in the Network setup there are two other port settings, namely TCP and HTTP.

 

We use a Client Software which we load onto the client's PC. I assume this software uses the TCP Port set in the DVR.

 

We use an App which we install on their i-phone.

 

We do Port Forwarding in the client's router and open both the "Mobile Monitor " port and the TCP port - normally we assign different descriptive names in the router for each port forward such as PC and Mobile.

 

 

My questions below are aimed at helping me (and hopefully other Forum readers) more fully understand how remote and mobile access works.

 

1. Is it necessary to use a different Port number from the one in "Mobile Monitor" in the TCP Port field? eg if Mobile Monitor is set to 34599, then can this same port be used as the TCP Port or is that not a good idea?

 

2. Why in one case can I access a client's DVR from my PC at my place, but I can't access it on my i-phone? In this case I am attempting to use the same Port number - it works on my PC Client but doesn't work on my i-phone App and I can't quite understand why?

For question number one:

 

Yes, all three ports must be unique from each other. Furthermore, if you are setting up remote access for multiple dvrs at the same location, the ports should be unique from eachother across all the dvrs. This shouldn't be too difficult since everything between 1000 and 65535 is available. Also, they are arbitrarily numbered. Under 1000 and they are supposed to correspond to standard protocols (21 is ftp, 23 is telnet, 80 is http/www, 25 is smtp) but it's not actually enforced.

Your HTTP port is for when you use internet explorer and you must have http:// in front of your URL. And after your URL you must enter :port#. EX http://joeshmoe.nvrdns.com:8000. Your TCP port is what mobile devices use when they log in to the dvr. The two ports MUST be different so the DVR can distinguish if a computer or a mobile device is logging and and will know how to respond

to it. The DVR lets mobile devices log into the extra stream which is a lower resolution than the HTTP port because the DVR knows that a mobile device will most likely have a smaller screen and be on a 3g or 4g network, not high speed broadband.
