Mini/small NVR suggestions

Recommended Posts

i'm looking to get rid of all my analogue cams and just use the 2 Acti's i have and the Dahua Domes... is there a mini NVR setup/system that i can use for a small footprint?

I currently have an Aver nano 1008h and can only do 4 IP cameras of 1.3/2.0mp.

something small that can handle all IP and audio from the Acti's Build it yourself or just buy something already there that can take the IP cams? And be able to view on a windows/ Mac and iPhone

Or should i go All Acti's and use their software on a miniPC? (then same question as above what specs and how small can i go? even if i have to use an external esata Drive as well

thanks!

Size an absolute priority? If not, you can find older PCs on Ebay/CL for super cheap. If it's an issue, then what software are you going to use? Avigilon has these requirements: http://avigilon.com/#/products/avigilon-control-center/system-requirements/ .. not sure if those are for just the software or what.

Based on that, this might fit the bill: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813157247

The AMD 350 APU beats an Intel Core Duo 2ghz. It also has a built in AMD graphics processor (AMD's good at marrying all of their components for encoding/etc) and a 1000Mbps network adapter. Slap on some ram, find a nice case, and a hard-drive.

There's some new half-sized ITX boards coming, but I'm not sure when. Been a while since I read that article.

I originally ran ACTi NVR software on a Atom based net top, a Zotac ZBox to be specific with 6 cameras, all 1.3MP and it worked well, very low CPU usage.

The smallest you can go is to get nothing. For example get Axis cameras with SD card slots, record directly on the camera. Then you only need a dedicated PC. You only need it when you want to look at the cameras or recordings using the free Axis Camera Companion software. I'm working on a review now that hopefully I'll publish by the weekend. 32GB SD cards are pretty cheap now and you'll save electricity and space.

Looking forward to that review buellwinkle, I have a Customer who wants 12 Axis P3346VE's (on a house). Was going to build a Milestone Server, but the price is too high.

So I will suggest either an SD card solution or Stream to NAS. He does want viewing on his TV's so a guess I will need a PC running the Companion Software to view multi screen on the TV. I must say I have spoke to Axis and Netgear direct and they havent been much help in helping me confirm the spec, only that Axis say stick to the NAS choices on their website or I may burn in Hell

I've been testing with 4 cameras, but all SD card. I still want to test to NAS, just out of town today but will get to it tomorrow. The PC does not have to be on to record, only to view, so you can take advantage of sleep mode on PC's or turn them off at night or share a PC with other apps.

since it's a small cafe i'd like to have a few weeks to a month of storage of six to eight 1.3-2mp cameras.. maybe a thin dell with a few huge hard drives.

will a regular 8 port linksys handle this?

also does bluirus handle the acti audio and record it?

either use "smart tvs" and view the cams and nas in its browser, or get something like this:

install your viewer app on it (i use this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.rcreations.ipcamviewerBasic) and away you go.

Many small form factor (SFF) or thin PCs have limited space for hard drives, and many won't accept add-on cards, if you might want to go that way, so it's good to check. Also, many small Dells and similar PCs are designed on the edge of their heat handling capability, and adding extra hard drives can cause heat problems.

I have some mini-ITX boxes that are quite small, but no room for RAID, second hard drive, video card, etc. I expanded several of them by putting the guts into micro-ATX boxes, which generally have more room, better airflow, etc.
