IP camera on a moving vehicle real time monitoring

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if there are any brands of cameras that can do a real time video stream to a centrally placed NAS box or some other storage, via a 3G network.

The purpose of such a system is to monitor a cash transport vehicle. Also costing is critical, so can't opt for a very ambitious solution as there are over 1000 vehicle to be monitored !!!

Please suggest some cost effects solutions

We use a 4G solution where we have a mobile router that uses a USB stick from Verizon. Then you can connect any network camera to it. If you want an all in one solution with 4G built into the camera, check out my review on Brickcom as they can do 3g/4g in camera. That camera is more expensive being HD and outdoor where they may have an indoor vga camera that is 4G that is way less expensive.

Thank you Beullwinkle " title="Applause" /> , for the push in the right direction. Though the model that you suggested wouldnt have worked out because of the price factor, they do have some lower end versions, prices of which I have asked for so that I could do a comparison !

If anyone else has solved such a situation with any alternative methods, please do share your experience

Have you priced your estimated bandwidth costs? If price is a big issue then monthly charges over, say, 5 years may be intimidating. Definitely consider h.264 solutions over MPEG/mjpeg ones even if startup costs are slightly higher. I would even recommend buying one of each solution you find and doing a price vs performance comparison before outfitting that many vehicles with a limited budget.

Unless your a government entity your going to run into bandwidth caps and you could have to pay HUGE overage fees.

I have worked with a couple of interesting solutions that are analog based that include integrated live mapping with sensors for speed, braking, G-Force and Role over.

If you don't need live streaming you can use a system that buffers the video in the car and then off loads the video when the car gets back to home base. Over a wifi network.

You say you want to monitor over 1000 cars. Say your playing 49$ a month per car that would be $49,000 a month without any overage fees

Precisely my point. The startup cost of the cameras is going to be a pittance compared to the long-term operating costs. Trying it out for a month on a small scale may prevent a staggering unanticipated deficit after a full-scale rollout. A project like that needs deep pockets.
