I have a bunch of IP cams (Axis P33's, Panasonics, etc..) and its been a pain to manage all the different settings and cam specific issues. If I get an NVR can it handle all of the motion detection settings, port forwarding, email notifications of all the cams from it own interface? In other words will my IP cams only supply video and not do any other functions? I'm not familiar with NVR's.

Thanks..

You can do as you describe with Axis P33 cameras using the free Axis Camera Companion (ACC). The others, not so much and you'll need a full blow NVR or NVR software that supports all your cameras brands.

Some software like ExacqVision will allow the cameras to do motion detection, but record at the NVR or software. Most NVR's or NVR software does the motion detection and recording at the NVR.

Most NVR software does most or all of those things one way or another, but the implementation and effectiveness varies dramatically from vendor to vendor.

Best bet is to download some demos and start testing. It'll clarify the concepts a lot, and give you a much better idea of what's important to you in terms of software interfaces. Most software packages have demo or free light versions available.

I'm considering that Costco Q-See 4 or 8? channel NVR that comes with the 4 720P cameras. Replace my other cams with the Q-See 720P. Then connect my axis cams using the network. cams.

The Axis P33 cams are very nice but there are somethings which really annoy me that maybe NVR control could improve. Such as:

--No SSL email support, need 3rd party email server.

--Motion detection is near impossible get reasonably set. Either to many false triggers or no trigger at all.

Check to make sure Q-sees NVR will connect with Axis cameras.

As for the motion windows i can't stand them. Acti and Axis both use motion windows but it is impossible to configure motion windows to work reliably 24/7 under varying lighting conditions.

Mobotix's motion windows work extremely well day and night.

Avgilon's motion detection is fantastic. It works day/night without any tweaking. Only issue we have had is objects that are very far away but we can address that with ramp up recording.
