Bandwidth limit in a household network

Is there a limit on the number of cameras (VGA resolution) you could install in a household network with cat5e cabling?

 

Do the cameras consume bandwidth constantly or just when you load the monitoring app?

You can run a LOT of VGA cameras (especially h.264 ones) over one cat 5e cable. You should have no practical limitation unless you go to town "Truman Show"-style. The cams would use bandwidth whenever they're transmitting data, so basically whenever they're being viewed or recorded. Even if you managed to saturate a 100mbps switch, going with a gigabit connection over the cat 5e would solve that.

Hey kouroubel, just for reference I previously had 4 cameras, two running at D1 resolution and 2 at 1280×720 all running on non-gigabit switch over a mix of CAT5e and CAT6. There is a gigabit uplink on the switch that connects out to the network, however that's it. They were being constantly monitored via Blue Iris, so they were running all the time.

 

No issues.

At VGA resolution you are using something like 1-5 megabits per second depending on frames per second sent. So even on a 100 megabit switched network you would have enough bandwidth for dozens of cameras. If you aggregated multiple cameras into 100 megabit PoE switches and then uplinked them to a gigabit core switch you could run even more.

So even on a 100 megabit switched network you would have enough bandwidth for dozens of cameras. If you aggregated multiple cameras into 100 megabit PoE switches and then uplinked them to a gigabit core switch you could run even more.

 

At VGA resolution you should be well less then 1Mbps per camera.
