alphatester 0 Posted January 21, 2013 Hi first post so go easy on me ! im wondering why the Cat5 Balun on the dvr side is overheating to the point where the smell is noticeable pretty much straight away after power up. the other 3 channels are fine. it got so hot that it disfigured the casing of the balun. i tried a new balun and its also heating up, so i disconnected it straight away. ive tested the cable for shorts and its fine, no shorts across any cores of the cat5. its aslo a short run, about 25 feet. Anyone any ideas. could the camera cause this? any help is appreciated.
dtmcnamara 0 Posted January 22, 2013 Plug another camera to that port (to make sure it is not the port) if it does not heat up the same we can rule out that the DVR is doing it. Since you have tried another balun we can rule this out (unless both were bad). Finally, if possible, try to do another run. This will clean up any possibility that for some reason the video and power wires are touching somewhere in the shielding. I have also had problems in the past with cheaper cable not working so well passing video and power. Good luck
alphatester 0 Posted January 22, 2013 Thanks. it turned out to be a faulty camera.
