Has IP gotten cheap enough to replace budget analog?

Recommended Posts

If you buy the camera and NVR from the same manufacturer and home run the cables directly from to the NVR, there is ZERO extra networking that needs to be done over an analog system. Its plug and play. Regardless of the way you go, run ethernet for future upgrades.

Thanks!

Searching around I found a thread you replied to suggesting this system

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16881183053&cm_re=laview-_-81-183-053-_-Product

The company has a few how-to videos, it looks really good for the price.

That is a good system as well. Its a rebranded hikvision system (though the cameras are NOT identical to the 2032 so they cannot take that firmware)...laview provides good tech support as well. Remember you need to add a hard drive, get a wd purple. You cant go wrong with it.

Note that the plus side to buying from costco, is their unlimited return policy...

Thanks. Their videos say ONIF-S compatible. Does that mean that I can add cameras by other manufacturers?

Adding a HD is no big deal. Do you see any reason to spend over twice the price of this system on the Lorex? My thoughts are to keep the price as low as possible when dealing with electronics since a couple years from now there will likely be a much better product out.

I searched around for Costco's return policy on electronics... it's 90 days. I have heard it used to have no limit, which would probably scam them a lot.

Dont rely on onvif from any manufacturer..its not a perfect standard...often features like motion detection dont play well with other brands..it varies.

As far as costco, its a personal choice..the 90 day limit does not apply to security cameras..its very specific..it only applies to certain electronics likes, pc's, digital cameras, cell phones, etc..you can return the ip cameras anytime.

That is quite tempting.

What do you think about the Swann kit?

I wish these systems had better reviews, the Swann looks decent.

That kit is way overpriced...The 3mp are not the greatest when it comes to night vision...you need to disable wdr (or keep it low) and turn up the noise reduction..

I called up Q-see asking about the difference between these kits:

http://www.costco.com/Q-See-16-Channel-IP-NVR-with-3TB-HDD%2c-12-3MP-Cameras-with-100'-Night-Vision.product.100220054.html#BVRRWidgetID

http://www.costco.com/.product.100213199.html?cm_sp=RichRelevance-_-itempageVerticalRight-_-CategorySiloedViewCP&cm_vc=itempageVerticalRight|CategorySiloedViewCP#BVRRWidgetID

Q-see said basically the only difference between the NVR is the hard disc capacity (2 drives vs. 4).

How much clearer is the 4mp vs. 3mp camera. Q-see said it will basically only be noticeable when using digital zoom or if displayed on a very large screen.

On the dahuas I have not seen a great improvement in the nightvision on the 4mp...but I have not seen or done a side by side comparison...heck, why struggle with it, its costco, order both, test one camera from each NVR in the same location (make sure to disable the ir on the camera not being tested) and see for yourself...the return is easy as pie.
