sisitv 0 Posted January 29, 2013 Hi all, I'm quite new to the CCTV community and need some help regarding CCTV cables. I'm want to make my own cables and all the connectors I'm finding online are for RG59 cables but a lot of the pre-made cables on the market use much thinner cable with strands inside rather than the single copper core. The pre-made cables look and feel really flimsy, I doubt they're even 18 gauge but I don't know a lot about wiring. My question is this: do I have to use a RG59 siamese cable or are there different connectors that can be used with thinner cables? Has anyone made CCTV video cables using off the shelf wire and connected BNC ends to them? If so, what kind of connectors were used? thanks, Al
shockwave199 0 Posted January 29, 2013 Don't use the thin stuff to make your own. Use good quality siamese cable and use twist-on bnc connectors and good quality power barrels if you have to wire them on for cameras. I'm not just being super picky suggesting that. It's just that the premade wire is for people who don't want to be bothered, but when you commit to putting your own connectors on, you want good cable for the effort. Good luck. aibudo 0 Posted January 29, 2013 If you're not going to be using ready made cables, then by all means use the readily available Siamese RG59/18-2 cable. You can attach the coaxial pigtails needed for power and I recommend either "crimp" or "compression" connectors for the RG59. In the past, I have used crimp F59 along with F59 to BNC adapters or compression BNC. Dennis
