spebola 0 Posted March 24, 2013 I want to place a camera at my driveway gate. I have a deaf dog, and I need to make sure the gate is closed before I let him out, he can't hear an approaching car. The gate is about 350 ft. from the house and no line of site. I do have power at the gate. I also have a 7 pair 18 ga wire (not twisted) cable to the gate. I do have a CCTV system for the house with unused channels (BNC connectors). What are my options short of running a coax or CAT5 cable to the gate? Can the 7 pair cable be used? spebola 0 Posted March 24, 2013 I had a couple of baluns laying around so I decided to test using 2 of the 18 ga wires in the 14 wire cable. Using a 1/3 Sony CCD domed camera, the picture quality was excellent which was suprising. I buried that cable 30 years ago and many gophers have crossed that section of the compound. Kawboy12R 0 Posted March 25, 2013 Sweet that it worked. If it didn't, although cctv toys are nice, I was going to suggest maybe just a switch that closes when the gate is closed and lights up an LED in the house somewhere. Open the gate, break the connection, and the tiny light goes out.
