Multiple cameras running over one cable (I am a newbie)

Recommended Posts

Hi

I set up a system of 6 cameras a couple of years ago. I have been asked by the owner to install an extra DVR and 6 more cameras.

The setup is; the office (DVR room)is 60m from the front of the building, this is where the 6 cameras will be. The cameras are all in close proximity of eachother.

My question is, Do I have to run 6 cables from the DVR directly to the cameras, or is there such a thing as a hub or similar solution, where I can connect all the cameras to a centralized location and then run all the data back to the DVR ?

Any help or ideas would be appreciated.

Regards

Peter

If you really mean DVR (analog cams with BNC connectors), you can get by with two cat5e (or preferably cat 6) cables if you use video baluns and have local power for the cameras, otherwise you'll need a third cable from near the DVR and use power/video baluns. One pair of wires per camera for video, 4 pairs/cable. Use the rest of the unused pairs for power if needed.

Thanks for your replies.

I think the video baluns and local power are the best option for this particular task.

Now I just need to read up on how to use the video baluns!
