Physical Layout of Switch

Recommended Posts

This may sound alittle basic but just wanted to make sure. been awhile (15 years) since i been in networking

wanted a gigabit switch but can afford it. so here is what i have

24 port cisco POE router 10/100 ports. With (4) gigabit up link ports.

modem/router/wireless connected to DSL

PC acting as a DVR

12 3MP cams at 15fps

Other: Laptops, VOIP, Media Servers, etc.

Connect Cameras, laptops, media, VOIP and basically everything but PC running DVR to the switch on the 10/100 ports.

connect the PC DVR via gigabit nic configured local access only to gigabit port on router.

connect 2nd nic in PC DVR directly to the router.

That PC is gonna havta have some horsepower to service all of that megapixelage bro. Network setup sounds good, but why two (2) NICs on the PC? Explain that logic to me again please? What is the advantage of two (2) NICs?

To free LAN traffic. When viewing the cams over wifi or over ISP the LAN traffic from the cams will be isolated so. Cams to switch to PC. From PC direct to Router out to wifi or ISP. Other way you would be running traffic back through the switch that does not need to be there.

working on a itel I5 3.7 processor, 16 gig ram, 1 tb 7200 rpm sata drive. i have been good at killing things but we will see.

One NIC for cameras

Another for local LAN

to keep traffic separate
