Can DVR firmware be changed Between Different Manufacturers

Hello all, 1st time poster here.

 

I had my previous dvr replaced under warranty, hard drive was on the skits. The new dvr/replacement lacks 1 very important feature to me. It has NO ability to take snap shots & email them, only alarm/tag info.

 

I contacted the dealer & they are little help. My question is can I update the firmware with a substitute, dealer has no ability to provide different firmware.

 

The new replacement is RET1091 - Retina™ Surveillance 4-Channel DVR w/ PC & Mobile Remote Viewing, H.264 Compression (500GB HDD) from skywalker.com.

 

If I can't update the firmware I have no choice but to shop for a replacement that can do what I need which is pc viewing over wan & lan (have dynamic dns already), mobile android live viewing & most importantly jpeg snap shots during motion alarm via email.
