Intellex - replaced with new motherboard-

Recommended Posts

Have several intellex ultras that my supervisor didn't want to extend warranty for service, after testing, motherboards are bad, however after installing new motherboard the recovery disk for that units will not work, i assume because of a different nic mac address. Any help in this situation would be appreciated.

When you say the motherboard was bad - how did you figure out that it is the motherboard? As many Intellex Ultras we repaired in the past, only few that were motherboard damage... most of the problems were related to hard drives, power supplies and capture cards..

Unless you are changing the motherboard with exactly the same type and the same BIOS chip, it will not work - it is controlled by BIOS and then when you attempt to restore the software, it will recognize that it is not exact same motherboard, therefore will not allow restore.

MAC address will come in play only if restore is complete and then the issue will arise with Software Key, which tied to your old motherboard mac address... You probably can reuse the existing SW key if you know how to reuse existing MAC address, but that only will work if you can pass the BIOS requirement in restore process. The way it works is that when restore protocol starts, it checks validity of the motherboard... if you closely check, AD added certain code within BIOS not allowing easy transition when someone wants to replace motherboard or better yet, copy the platform.

No easy answers, but validate if your motherboards really were bad... if anything, you could have replaced the processor fans and visual inspect the capacitors on the motherboard - if you notice that caps are damaged or warped, then that may be an indication that motherboard is going bad, but that is not the rule... What goes bad mostly in these units are the hard drives - and even flush card that contains all the system OS and Intellex software..

If you need additional info, let me know.

Will double check the motherboards again, but we tested the power supplies which were good, pulled all cards, but stilled would not bootup. no post error codes ect...
