New Camera System - Coax + Cat5e

Before I begin, please pardon my complete ignorance when it comes to surveillance systems. The only cameras I've ever used were "wirelessly" connected to the home network.

 

I'm in the process of building a new home and have had wires run to several locations to install hardwired cameras with a DVR. The camera system I bought was from Costco and was a Swann system with 8 cameras (4 dome, 4 bullet). It appears that all cameras have a coax connector for video and also have a connector for DC power. They all also, much to my surprise, have PTZ wires as well. Some also have a yellow video cable as well as the coax cable (presumably for an alternative video option).

 

My builder ran two wires to each camera location - a coax and a Cat5e. While I'm confident that the Cat5e can be used to run DC power, my question is - do I need to use 2 or 4 wires for the DC, and since the Cat5e appears to have 8 wires - even if I use 4, I should still have 4 left over. Can I then use that to facilitate the PTZ functions?

 

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Probably not necessary to double up pairs unless you have large current draw (IR, PTZ, etc.)

 

If you do double up you can use a color code, no standard that Iam aware of but you can use one that makes sense to you.

 

EXAMPLE:

 

ORANGE -POS

GREEN - NEG

BLUE - VIDEO

BROWN - PTZ RS CONNECTION

Also,

 

you can just terminate the came runs into an RJ45 connection.

THEN FOLLOW WIRING STANDARD LIKE T-568 or T-568B.

Thanks icamera. I think I might leave the camera video as RG6 and use the Cat5e for power. That way, if I ever want to go straight POE - I can just change the Cat5e back to the standard and call it good. Thanks for your thoughts.

How long are these wiring runs and are these cameras 12 or 24 volt?
