eahheretik 0 Posted July 18, 2013 Good afternoon folks, I know this isn't a "Video" question, but what are you guys doing for motion detection on your camera systems? I am building a pretty simple analog video system with a few cameras and baluns over Cat5 UTP. Is there such a thing as a POE motion detector? I'm looking for a good way to detect motion in areas I can't afford cameras. Thanks in advance.
Securame 0 Posted July 18, 2013 You can use a UTP cable to connect a PIR sensor without much hassle, just use two wires for the contact, and two wires for the power (some PIRs even have tamper, so you could use two extra wires). You will not even need a balun.
eahheretik 0 Posted July 18, 2013 That's exactly the sort of thing I'm looking for, thank you for your reply. Any idea what the distance limitation would be? Could I go 1000ft? What sort of unit would you use to manage multiple PIR sensors? Thanks, eahheretik

In case you need it, if you use UTP cable you could use up to 6 wires for the power. And before you lay the cable, you could just take a new roll of UTP and try it with the cable inside the box. And if you are also installing CCTV, you can just get a DVR that also has alarm inputs, you have plenty of options.
