CAMERAS ON LIGHT POLES

A LOT OF THESE CAR DEALERS OVER HERE HAVE HAD THESE CAMERAS INSTALLED OUT ON THE FARTHEST PART OF THE LOT MOUNTED ON THESE LIGHT POLES. WHO EVER INSTALLED THESE, WHAT ARE THEY DOING TO GET IT OUT THERE? I AM GUESSING THEY ARE RUNNING FIBER WITH IT BEING SO CLOSE TO THAT HIGH VOLTAGE. BUT HOW WOULD THEY RUN THAT FIBER WITHOUT TEARING UP THE EXISTING CONCRETE? ( I KNOW THEY DID NOT ). DO YOU THINK THAT WHEN THAT PLACE WAS BUILT THEY RAN EXTRA CONDUIT AND JUST LEFT IT IN THE INSIDE OF THE POLE? ANY ONE WITH INFO FILL ME IN.

There could be an extra conduit to the poles but it's highly unlikely, no one ever seems to plan in advance like that. Look around the pole and you may see a larger grey 12x12 or so NEMA box. When we've done installations like that at remote locations, most of the time all we can do is send the signal wirelessly. Then what we do is have an electrician give us an outlet before the photo sensor on the light pole so we have constant power, then mount the wireless transmitter in a NEMA box and send the video back to the main unit wirelessly.

there is nothing. no boxes nothing. I am thinking these are just housings. Nothing else. There seems to be too many of them. Most people cant afford that.

What kind of distances are these poles from the main office, or other buildings?

 

How close are they to the high voltage, and are these street light type poles, like real high voltage, or just regular outdoor lighting?

 

Any wire run down the pole, or is it hidden?

 

Did you see the resulting video image? Is it clear, or are there any lines in it. eg. interference.

 

They simply could have used existing conduit with twisted pair, or even snaked new coax or twisted pair in the conduit. I dont think a car lot is going to spend the dollars needed for fiber .. i deal with a couple of them here, though they are rather small compared to those in the US.

 

Ive seen one install here where the camera cable was run inside the pole with the high voltage, and using twisted pair and baluns, they were just lucky for some reason they had no really "serious" interference, but there was some interference, thats for certain.

Perimeter surveillance such as this is an ideal application for Broadband over PowerLine (BPL).

 

Other good applications are heritage buildings (walls are thick sandstone so wireless is out, can't cable due to heritage restrictions) and campuses (BPL replaces trenching).

I'm curious, are you sure they're working units? We have spoken to a few car dealers that have "cameras" and they turned out to be fakes.

We actually have a few car dealerships that we are installing on light poles. We are doing wireless setups. Pretty simple installations really.

We don't use any specific brand of wireless. We assemble our own AP's and CPE's from board-level components. I can give a bit more direction once our pantent is fully issued.
