32 channel IP Possibilites

Recommended Posts

Hi all. I have been reading on the forum for a while gathering information and have found it very useful. However, up until now I have only done analog systems (mainly geovision), I have no problem setting up everything with those dvrs (such as masking, remote viewing/port forwarding..., pos setup, ptzs). Now I am attempting to do an office complex with 32 cameras for which I need higher resolution than 700tvl, and for this reason I have decided to do an IP NVR setup. I am familiar with the basic concepts however I could use some advice and help before I begin buying things.

The plan is to use 32 3MP cameras. For the NVR I am leaning towards geovision just because I have experience with the software, however I am open to suggestions (I know I will have to buy licenses for the cameras if they are not geovision). There are no ptzs, all I would need is good resolution locally, a siren connected to the system that will trigger with motion on a couple of the cameras, as well as remote viewing on all devices.

The main concern I have is with bandwidth. Is it even possible to have this many high res cameras on a single network? I will definitely be running the system on a separate parallel network but I'm not sure what type of equipment I will need for this. As far as remote viewing goes the location has fiber optic internet with download speeds of approx 100mb/s and upload of 40mb/s. Thank you in advance for any help to get me started.

ok thanks ak. Also I should mention the budget is 15k-20k. Can anyone direct me to a good resource where I can gain more knowledge about IP setups, with diagrams and walkthroughs on things like how the network should be laid out?

OK. Some questions

1. so if i have 32 cameras, can i even go up to 5MP?

2. Do I need a special type of router?

3. Can you recommend any high quality NVR systems/cameras?

4. Can I run ethernet cable past 300 feet with the power from the PoE or do i need to boost it along the way?

I'm finishing up a job right now that has two Video Insight NVRs each supporting 62 cameras. And it's all on the facilities infrastructure. The cameras are a mixture of 3 & 5 MP

I really like to have it as its own separate network but I had no say on this one but it is a robust network with fiber backbone between idfs and mdf.

Ethernet limit is 333 feet.

I had a camera at one job that was maybe close to this limit but not quite and it continuously dropped out. A mid span injector did the trick.

There are several good brands. Of course you will need to do some homework to keep in budget.

Avigilon, as seen in ak357's signature is a top notch brand.

I used some geovision cameras and have plans to use more. I find them to be good bang for the buck.

There is also Axis which is very highly rated.

I'm currently working with iq invision cameras and video insight nvrs. There's stuff I like but in some ways I miss avigilon.

As ak357 said, make sure to have 2 NICs per nvr, that way one goes to the Poe switch for the cameras and the other to the facility network.

Good luck

What the "story" about Avigilon ?

The shop I work for was using avigilon. We were purchasing through a middle man distribution and I guess avigilon went through this big re-structuring and stopped going through this chain of distribution. I guess my shop couldn't promise the numbers to be a full on distributor.

Check out 3xlogic.com.

I have bought their software and DVRs for a bunch of projects (casinos, retail, homes)

You can get a 4U rackmount NVR for $6,500. Includes Core i7, 8GB, Win7 x64, and 8x 3TB drives in either RAID10 or RAID6. It will do 32 IP cameras. If you need hybrid, add $500 for a capture card. They should have a 2U case certified soon for NVR (no capture cards) installs soon.

32 $300 decent 2MP or 3MP cameras = $9,600 in cameras. So, $16K for 32 cameras and NVR. Or just around $500 a camera.
