How to calculate the NVR Storage?

Recommended Posts

If I have some x no. of cameras, recording at some x hours and x days etc.

What should be the major factors involved in calculating the NVR storage in order to purchase correct GB/TB storage NVR/DVR?

Please suggest.

Your storage is set by the bit rate setting on each camera. If it's set for 4096 kb/s, that's your data rate, and you can calculate the storage requirements based on this. For instance, the storage size required per minute is:

((bit rate in kb per second)/8)*60 = MB/minute

If you use variable bit rates, it depends on how your camera processes the signal, but there's not usually a big difference that I see.

Be aware of the difference between bps - bits per second (usually used for bit rate and network settings) and Bps - Bytes per second, used for data storage.

I made a small calculator with php/ajax, for now it's only in finnish, but should give you some kind of estimate.

Explanation of fields:

1. Hours of recording / day

2. % of movement in the recorded time

3. For how long you want your recordings to be available (days)

4. Amount of cameras

5. Camera bitrate
