HI everyone. I'm new to this CCTV business and I have a specific one off requirement. At the end of my garden is a road and over the road is a field we use to keep horses. Thanks to a recent Speight of horse box, horse and lamb theft I need to put some surveillance in place. I'm looking for an outdoor camera I can place at the bottom of the garden (I can route CAT5 and mains down to there) with the following features / requirements:

1. Night vision

2. Remote PTZ

3. Remote accessible over the net (including PTZ control)

4. Constant recording (no point having motion detection because the cars and people on the road will set it off)

5. Some means of being able to commit the recordings to disc on a PC on say a 24 hour basis should I need to go back through time (in a non Dr Who way) or make it easy to delete recordings to clear space.

Having looked around I have seen a couple of cameras (and I think I need dome style for outdoor and PTZ). One is EasyN and the other is the Foscam. However both seem to have good and very poor review from people on places like Amazon.

The other issues is not knowing which S/W package to use. Foscam tried to sell me Blue Iris (which turns out not to be a geriatric porn star) despite there being plenty to choose from on the free downloads front.

I'm thinking of steering clear of Wifi because at 6ft from the router I think I'll struggle. I have a PC lined up at home for the recordings because the cloud providers seemed to want too much money when I wanted a decent frame rate, image size and length of recording.

What advice could people give me on all of this.

I am confused about if you want to prevent theft or want to have proof of theft when your horse is long gone?

When using camera's you will want some motion detection with early notice if someone approaches your horse in a inappropriate way. Like a notification of opening a fence with quality footage.

If you cannot position camera's the right way a fence alarm might be the way to go. Camera's then will only be complementary.

I am sorry if this answer disappoints you but first make sure you are going the right way before investing.

Yeah in fields where animals are roaming an alarm switch at the gate to trigger recording and a recorded meessage like the Voice Off system might just do the trick for you. Both the camera brands you mention are fairly poor performers across their raange. Take a look at Samsung or Lilin PTZ cameras and if your budget can stretch that far Redwall PTZ, Security Dynamics and even Eneo but I warn you they are not cheap toys like you see you see on the internet auction sites.

Invest in some signage and a few dummy cameras first, also get the animals microchiped and again signs notifying thieves that they will have to deal with microchips and hiding from CCTV before selling the animals on. They may find it easier to go where no chips or CCTV is in play.

Our friend here has a point the CCTV's primary job is to deter theft not record it so let the thieves

know they stand a chance of getting identified. Make yours a difficult hard target not a soft one.

Meantime I hope your animals remain safely in your care

Hi cheap way to protect horses is with a perimeter tag.

used with google earth mask off safe area and once tag goes out of that zone alarm is sent and then can be tracked.

If you are looking for a long term solution DO NOT buy cheap stuff! Also bare in mind because PTZ cameras have moving parts inside them, they need a lot more maintenance.

Pre recorded sound that plays and warns the intruders off might be a great solution for you.

BARE? as in naked as a jaybird?

Surely you mean bear as in bearing the burden of guilt or bearing a load?

Just proves what a great language English is and how

Don't you just hate it when people ask you to 'bear with them' on the telephone, what they really mean is 'just stay on the line like a lemon' while I go and get a cup of coffee and a pretzle often they say this several times in a conversation so I always say I'm still bearing from the last time you said that or "can I stop bearing now?"

Sorry for the off topic rant...over to you.
