DVR Questions

Recommended Posts

Afternoon all,

Apologies for this question, but I have recently been given the mantle of CCTV guru at work. However my knowledge of this area is limited.

I have a couple of questions in relation to CCTV.

The setup:

We currently use a generic Chinese DVR with no specific make or model details within a 5 metre radius of it. There are 4 channels recording onto a 500GB HDD in H264 format.

Q1) If I remove the HDD from the current DVR and install it in a different (still unbranded) DVR would I be able to play the video files located on the disc, or is the encoding for each box specific meaning it wouldn't play in a rivals box.

Q2) If I remove the HDD from the current DVR and connect it to a PC, is there any software (windows based preferably) that would enable me to play the data. It would also have to have some form of date/time/camera search facility. I am aware of things like VLC player that would play the H264 files, but it would be important to retain some form of date/time search function. Like on the DVR itself when using the playback function.

Thanks

Colin
