Recommended Posts

Anyone used a usb/com port lead with any success?

I need an extra com port to connect a gv-io external box.

Well the one we used is a box of Serial Ports, i think it was 6 or 8 ports, and wasnt cheap ... you have to set up the software also ..

Thought one of you might have tried it

Cant go wrong for £5.

I emailed the seller and he says it gives you a "virtual" com port!WTF.

GV hub gives 4 but $$

Is there a pci card that gives a rs232 port ?

Tanks guys, found em now

Just a crazy thought, would a printer port work as a rs232 com port with a converter plug in?

Tom, expensive

Rory, its not for a printer , its to see if i can connect it to a printer (parallel) port to com port , then to ptz convertor.

You asked if it existed. You didn't ask if it was reasonable. Now the fun part. How from a software connection are you going to make it look like a com port? Mostly these are used if I want to see the serial port output.

Tom,

i see its value now. it converts the parallel port into an rs232 and vice versa.

I think?

Thanks Tom.

I had a (targus) usb port replictor lying around , it has a com port on it.

I tried it but it wont communicate with the ptz control, it mentions in the instructions it may not communicate with all devices via the com port through usb, guess i'm unlucky.

Thanks for the heads up on the convertor.

I also tied a twin pci serial port card, installed fine and listed in device manager as com 3 &4, wont communicate with Geovision for some reason,

even when i change com port settings in geo setup?

I havn't got anything else that connects to serial to test it, plug geo back in to com 1 and it works
