How do you setup secure VPN and email server for Axis IP

Recommended Posts

Hi

Basically this is for IP CCTV,i am used to doing it with a DVR,NVR or PC on each site with integrated programmes and teamviewer etc but this company i am looking to join dont use any apart from NAS,using axis network cameras like this http://www.axis.com/products/cam_p3364ve/index.htm .

Im looking at router like this http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/routers/ps9923/ps11025/data_sheet_c78-630461.html

This is how Axis recommend connection with their cameras for NAS ;

http://www.axis.com/files/manuals/acc_NAS_best_practices_130626.pdf

I have never (knowingly)setup a VPN before maybe its auto or in install wizard on products ive installed before,so be nice to learn more about it and what to do.

The boss asked me in the interview about setting up in the future, his vision is to have each site we install connect with a unique id/ip to create a cloud network/secure VPN everyone in our company can access remotely from anywhere and to send cctv alarms and videoclips when triggered to alarm receiving centre and our office to alert engineers via email link also,so he wants me to create an email server too.

Example or something like this or any suggestions welcome ;

Setup and run your own smtp server, buy domain name to personalise email addresses?

The company i am looking to join has website and emails on www.dkcctv.se (exampe)but i think would be better to seperate this from that but with a connection in the name as the alarm receiving centre is a 3rd party etc,i havent joined them so i dont know what host they use or email etc, maybe it would be possible to setup an email server using the company domain name

ie www.dkkund.se then attach domain to email server, setup email addresses multi sites. need email server with unlimited email addresses

and code each site and shorten but provide to larmcentral and office.

ie pb = peab , sk = skanska , then city, region or site name gth =gothenburg , mal = malmö , hel = helsingborg , vhmal = västra hamnen -malmö , csgth =central station- gothenburg

so pbvhmal3@dkkund.se = camera 3 at PEAB västra hamnen ,malmö site

or use postcodes so you can loo up customer or address 21439pb5@dkkund.se= PEAB spaånehusvgen site camera 5

so building site 1 PEAB Triangeln camera 1 peabtriangeln1@dkkund.se

PEAB Triangeln camera 2 peabtriangeln2@dkkund.se etc

site2 Skanska Gothenburg camera 1 skanskagothenburg1@dkkund.se

Setup a little like this

Network-Attached Storage (NAS)

As an alternative to local video recording to an SD/SDHC card, AXIS Camera Companion supports Network-Attached Storage (NAS) recording. This allows cameras without edge storage support to be part of an AXIS Camera Companion system, and record video to the NAS. Naturally, in such a system, the cameras do not become individual recording devices, but will require a network to function.

Reference products System size

QNAP TS-221 up to 8 cameras

Synology DS213+ up to 8 cameras

QNAP TS-269 Pro up to 16 cameras

Buffalo TS5200 up to 16 cameras

Uninterruptible Power Source (UPS)

In locations with unreliable power, a UPS can be a good investment to ensure maximum uptime. This is particularly beneficial for an AXIS Camera Companion system that uses Power over Ethernet to power its cameras over the network, since a single UPS can then be used to secure not only the network equipment but also all the cameras in the system – a clear advantage over analog DVR-based systems.

Switches

A Power over Ethernet (PoE) switch provides power to cameras over the network, removing the need for separate power cables.

Reference products PoE ports LAN ports

Netgear GS108P 4 4

Netgear FS116P 8 8

Routers

A router is typically used whenever wireless cameras are used, wireless local access is required or when remote access is enabled. Routers with Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) simplifies installation of Axis’ wireless cameras. Routers with UPnP simplify the setup of remote access to a system.

I need to setup a secure VPN Tunnel to process multiple sites from different companies to all forward cctv alarms etc to an alarm receiving centre 1st instance and my office and allow access for all engineers to be able to access remotely.

The customers sites will have axis ip cameras, ups,NAS and router no pc so all traffic will go out via the NAS and router.

I also need to setup a secure email server so that each camera on every site will have it own email address to forward out alarms and video recording clips to alarm receiving centre and to hold on a central server to enable office and engineer access to view.

I have idea on different parts of it and know how to do it with a pc but without a pc on sites not too sure with the NAS and router.

Do i need a dedicated receiving server/router at the alarm receiving centre and then we all dial into that remotely or set that up to forward to our emails?

Hope this gives you an idea of what i mean, any questions fire away.

Just need to know before wednesday please.

Thanks for your help!

Darren

All your cameras should be setup on the internal network, setting up a VPN has nothing to do with setting up cameras, you can use a hardware or software VPN, but this should be to establish a secure external link to the internal network, not for networking the cameras as these should all be on a secure internal network to begin with.

I suggest you do some reading on what a VPN actually is as you seem to be a little confused. Any company I have ever been to would never allow someone to setup their own VPN access to their networks.
