CCTV Equipment Selection Help - IP-PoE-NVR

Recommended Posts

Hello All,

I am in a process of helping my buddy build a CCTV system for his property upstate New York. This is not his primary residence and he only visits it a few times a month. Therefore, he would like keep an eye on it remotely and be alerted of any activity there. Normally not at lot happens on the property, therefore, we are not concerned of him being flooded with the large amount of notifications. The budget for the whole system is about $3000 to $4000.

Here is some additional info:

-the whole house has been pre-wired with Cat6, therefore, we would like to use PoE only cameras only

-the PoE switches we'll used are two Linksys LGS116P IEEE 802.3af and IEEE 802.3at -- http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/GetArticle.aspx?docid=7dfa354ecf9b4d44b8b51360e4a75e93_.xml&pid=80&converted=0

- he would like 8 night vision outdoor cameras and 1 night vision indoor camera installed - 2MP and above (picture quality matters to him a lot).

a)6 of these cameras will be attached to the outside of his home (the home is square 22ft by 30 ft is the size of the building)

b)2 of them will monitor his driveway/gate (the cat 6 is already installed underground; pure copper, shielded inside a pvc pipe; less than a 100meters/328 ft)

c) 1 camera will be installed inside the house

-since i will have to occasionally have to support this system for him, i would like for it to be a non-PC solution -- i guess it is more overhead. I am thinking more NAS or an NVR solution. It has to be easy for him to use and accessible remotely via computer browser and Android based phone.

-the NAS or NVR would also need to connect additionally to his TV (via HDMI) and an external mouse

-he needs to be notified of any activities via alerts and be able view the recorded notification content from his phone or computer.

-the retention for a recorded video ideally --> 30 days (if this is too expensive, he'll have to live with less)

Keeping in mind the budget of $3k to $4k as well as the above info, what can you guys recommend? Is this feasible? I've been looking at the tremendous amount of info available online. However, last thing i want to do is to recommend something to him and then find out that is doesn't perform as intended. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
