Logitech Alert vs ?

Good day all,

 

I recently moved into a new house and the previous owners left the Logitech Alert system on the home and gave instructions on how to use it. There are 2 cameras and it works great, but I'd like to upgrade the system a bit.

 

Wondering where I should start in terms of IP cameras similar to Logitech Alert (It's a rather large house, and I'm not handy at all.) I'm OK with drilling for the camera mount, but I have no idea how to run cable through the walls to a central location. The Logitech system has a POE adapter and then sends the data through the electrical system of the home which works great.

 

That's what I'd like to keep it as. POE, Power Line Ethernet but with a higher quality camera.

 

Any advice? I've done some reading on the forum and don't understand a lot of what I'm reading. Forgive me, but I'm a pilot not a CCTV expert!

Find an electrician and have the wires run. How are these cameras recording now? Is there an NVR and if so, what is it?

Currently Logitech Alert runs desktop software that pulls the video in and records it that way. Just on my PC.

 

Looks like adding more Alert cameras may be the only way? I don't want the expense of running cable through this house. Powerline Ethernet works fantastic for the Alert I'm wondering why no one else uses this technology?

my 2 cents, i used a 6 logitech camera setup for 2 years.

 

it was very reliable ( for me atleast) no failures etc.

 

I hardwired as possible, i only used 2 of the 4 POE over powerline adapters.

 

Do you have access to an attic? or any access under the house? That would be a good place to start.

 

The Logitech Alert system is decent, but for the price of a single alert camera, you can do MUCH MUCH better, just that you will have to figure a way to wire everything up.

 

I have used hikvision 3mp cameras with the logitech POE adapters, it seems to work for atleast 2-3 cameras, Not sure on the limit on the powerline bandwidth the logitech adapters have.

How are you using the Logitech adapter for more than 1 camera? Plugging a switch into it or something? That sounds interesting... I could run Ethernet to each camera outdoors or something. That's interesting and I'm really interested to know more!

i am using 1 logitech adapter for 1 camera

 

the logitech poe/powerline adapters will work with any POE capable cameras that draw 7.5 watts or less.

 

i do have cameras that are run from ethernet cable to a POE switch which is connected to my main switches.

 

please keep in mind, that other cameras will require different setups for recording etc.

I do like that Powerline is built in to the Logitech camera but I just use a regular cheap Trendnet Powerline adapter with an outlet on it. Then I plug a wall plug style PoE injector and it works well for me. In most cases, it's about the same price to get an electrician in to run the Ethernet to where I want it. In the one case I use it, it would have been very difficult to hard wire.

Thank you buellwinkle. Would it be too much to ask for you to provide a link, or brand name to both the Powerline adapter you use, as well as the plug style PoE injector?

 

Knowing that you have had success with these particular units would really help my purchase.

I use the TRENDnet TPL-307E2K which you can google and see where to get it from. Then I use a wall type injector like this one - http://www.amazon.com/Autoranging-Switching-48V-0-5A-Injector-Security/dp/B00CWVYG50/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1388256595&sr=1-2&keywords=wall+poe+injector

 

And then I use a short 1' Cat5 cable between the Powerline adapter and the injector and then a cable from the injector to the camera.
