Test signal of B/W rear view camera

Recommended Posts

I have a motor home with an older Panasonic B/W rear view monitor system. I have been have problems with it for some time and the monitor screen now has no picture. I want to get the monitor refurbished but must ship it out of state and want to be sure the camera is still working before I do so. The camera is linked to the monitor via a single coaxial cable. I have a "satellite finder" signal strength unit (an Eagle Aspen, SF-99, 950-2250 MHz) . Can I use this to determine if I am receiving a signal from the camera? Note: the power light on the monitor still comes on indicating power to the unit power.

Thanks,

jdr37

No. If the camera is cabled then it is running at composite video baseband (around 5.5Mhz). Given its age it would be cheaper to upgrade. If you are sure it is the monitor at fault than you could go and buy a miniture TV ( I use one with a 6" screen as a test monitor) & simply plug the camera into the "Video In"

Thanks for the info/ My problem is that I DON'T[ know for sure if the camera is good and it's location makes it a very difficult to remove/replace. Any idea on how I can verify it is working without first removing it?

Hi jdr37.

It may be difficult to test the camera, as it depends on how the camera receives its power. It could be powered from the reversing lights (which saves the installer from having to run a power lead to the camera), or it could be powered through the coax (which Panasonic sometimes did to make installation cheaper and easier).

Given that the camera is mounted "outside", it could be worthwhile to replace the setup with something newer. How old is the camera and monitor? What model is it?

I decided to replace the system . I purchased 5" B/W monitor with camera and 65' of cable from Tim at www.RVCams.com for $99.00. Great product, price and the service is exceptional.
