Problems with HDD

I bought an 8-channel DVR from Maplin last summer, while I was in the UK. Took it back home (Mauritius), installed it, and since the start it didn't work well. For instance to change cameras, menus etc. had to press several times. It's like the unit is deaf to commands sometime. It's not the remote because the on-board buttons do the same. Now I have a new big problem: the HDD has disappeared. The red access light stays black, and when going into "DEVICES" it says there is no HDD. I tried to format, but nothing happens, since it cannot find a disk.

 

As the unit is on guarantee, you may think I should send it back, however shipping back and forth from the UK it may add up to some 100£, so I opened it, disconnected/reconnected the disk, and same thing. Now it's even worse because when I try to go into "devices" it hangs the whole system without even getting into the devices screen.

 

I wonder if it could be software. Is there a way to do a system reset? or how can I reinstall the firmware?

If you plug the camera output (RCA or BGA) to your TV's CVBS or external AV port, you would find the camera is working OK or not.

As to DVR Box, it seems broken.
