Axis Cameras on new home install...which!

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

We are currently debating which Axis cameras to install. I've had two installation companies come out and they both were pretty clueless. I've installed around 75-80 axis/iqinvision/stardot cameras but never in a residential setup. This is for my own house now.

We are trying to keep the cameras discreet, except for our main gate. Here are the locations and the light/mounting style etc, and what I've come up with:

Front Gate - Axis Q1765-LE. Will be mounted approx. 20' from call box.

Front Door - Axis M3026 - low light area

Front Service door - ceiling is arched here, we're not sure how we will be mounting a camera here. Another low light area.

Car Park #1 - need a bullet as the mounting area is small. Even the Q1765 base may be too big

Coach house door - same issue with Front service door, it's arched... still no idea how we will mount here.

Back Door - Flat mounting area, am thinking M3026 again. Another low light area.

Back door #2 (upper lanai), flat mounting area, am thinking M3026, here also.

Lower Lanai - Mobotix 360. Very low light here, however a motion sensor will be connected to the crestron system. If the alarm is armed and motion is detected, lights will turn on. The cable is dead center in the middle of the area (pretty much square shaped).

Now. I've installed 3367-VE's before and they work great, however the M3026-VE's are a little smaller and we're trying to keep these from not 'popping' too much. I can't seem to find an outdoor rated recessed adapter for any axis cameras (why!?).

So how do the P3367 or 3384 work in low light?

My goal is: facial recognition and detail at night mainly, with a low profile.

Thoughts? Sorry it is tough to convey my ideas via text without any blueprints!

The P3367 does good in low light, the 3384 does better albeit at much lower resolution and you can't use WDR at the same time as Lightfinder, so without lightfinder, may not be any better than a 5MP p3367. I would get the P3364-LVE before the 3384.

As for the M-domes, smaller for sure, but 1 yr. vs. 3 yr. warranty on the P, no auto-focus, no varicocal and the fixed lens is extremely wide which lowers the ability to id someone much further than 10' with that 2mm lens.

I need to review the Axis M30 domes, good price point, but without Lightfinder, not sure of the value prop for the 1.3MP with IR, but maybe I'm overthinking it. I'll see what's up at ISC West next week with new models.

Here are some more details. I guess I don't really mind not using Axis cameras.

Front Gate - (Camera will be facing North) Axis Q1765-LE. Will be mounted approx. 20' from call box.

Front Door - (Camera will be facing North-West, covered area) - Two Sconces for lighting

Front Service door - Camera will be facing North. Low light area, one sconce. Covered Area

Back Door - Camera is facing Southeast. Low light, one/two light sources.

Back door #2 (upper lanai) Camera is facing SouthEast, flat mounting area, am thinking M3026, here also.

Lower Lanai - Mobotix 360. Very low light here, covered, facing south/southeast. However a motion sensor will be connected to the crestron system. If the alarm is armed and motion is detected, lights will turn on. The cable is dead center in the middle of the area (pretty much square shaped).

Are there new products from axis coming out shortly?

ISC West starts next week, so stay tuned daily on camera manufacture's web sites news pages to get informed of new products coming out this year.

I expect Axis and others to announce many updates on their camera line.

Axis will update many of their dome cameras with their new fast ARTPEC-5 chip.

This chip will allow 60fps frame rate.

Don't expect shipping of new stuff till fall 2014...

If you are not set on a full Axis solution (ie. axis cameras+axis vms) for your installation, look at Avigilon cameras and Avigilon VMS.

Great cameras and great VMS.

360 degree cameras are terrible in low light conditions.

As soon as it gets slightly dark, a 360 camera will be useless.

When the motion light comes on, a 360 will take over 3 sec to stabilize to give a useable image...

A low light true day/night camera is recommended for low light areas.

Motion lights are great to help out only.

Thanks for the info on the 360'.

We will be done building in two months or so, so I don't think we will wait until fall for the cameras.

These Avigilon cameras seem interesting. I know nothing about them so I will have to do some research. I wish their website was a little more thorough.

For instance, if I look at the 5MP Dome Camera, there is a mounting option for outdoor dome with adaptive IR. Is this something you buy separately?

Thanks for all the info!

The Avigilon exterior dome cameras are nice and compact.

They are only 6.01" in diameter and 4.3" tall.

Very tough with thick stainless steel ring, well built.

Their exterior domes are thick rubber backed.

There are 4 mounting holes to secure the dome to wall or ceiling

There is 1 standard threaded cable entry hole in the base.

There is 1 standard threaded cable entry hole in the side

The exterior domes are surface mount with no options.

A pendant wall mount (with rain drip cover) and pole mount bracket is available.

Adaptive IR is an option for their dome cameras.

Internal IR is not recommended though. Separate IR is always better...
