OIL FILLED PC!!

Recommended Posts

Yea, but I dont think your MOBO will handle a Pentium D. Your going to spend an arm and a leg on a Pent D and new mobo that will support it.

My suggestion. (If your going to upgrade anyway)

-Get a new Mobo (socket 478) Something like MSI NEO2-V(Very good board for the$) keep your CPU (or get the 3.06 for $50 then you will have Hyperthreading)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813130467

-Get a set of dual channel low latency Memory http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820144169

Then you should be set. I have the same MOBO and Memory, and I can easily have Photoshop CS2, Videos Playing, Macromedia dreamweaver, adobe all running +_more and no lag at all. Oh, I am running a 9800Pro128MB and a Pent 3.4.

My current chip is a socket 478 and so is the 3.06 CPU with the hyper threading. Should work unless my BIOS won’t support it or any other reason I haven’t thought of. Like chipset support?

It is not worth upgrading the motherboard and memory. And definitely would not want to buy another CPU to put on it as I could put that money towards a new system. If I could get the 3.06 CPU to work for the $50 it is on sale for that might hold me over a little while longer. Your 3.4Ghz system is a lot more powerful then mine. Faster front side bus, memory, etc.

My next system is going to be an AMD. AMD is kicking the crap out of Intel with more powerful chips that run cooler and use less power.

Thats a nice motherboard. I wish I would have seen that before I boutght a PCI card for SATA support.

I couldn't find your CPU on their site, but I can see that is probably is still worth some money compared to my CPU.

Thanks for the links.

Yea, it seems like they removed it or sold out.

Here is my original invoice:

1 x Intel Pentium 4 3.4 Prescott 800MHz FSB Socket 478 Processor Model RK80546PG0961M - OEM

Item #: N82E16819116177

$283.00

No heatsink or fan came with it because I purchased one of these:

Here is the cheapest I found that CPU from pricewatch.com

how is that heatsink?

I just bought one off newegg yesterday for my Athlon 64 so I should see it around tuesday of next week.. it seems to be the best one I could find

also, this is the first computer I've had with temperature probes, does anyone know if you can put the CPU probe right between the heatsink and processor in the thermal grease? I wouldn't see why not, it's thin and small

You got a good deal KandCorp. Must have been on sale.

The motherboard and the chip would cost me more than that now.

But I appreciate the links.

Don't think putting those wires in between the thermal grease, CPU and heatsink is a good idea. Do you need those temp probes to find out the temperature? Are the probes specifcally for the CPU?

Or can you run a utility like SpeedFan to find out your temps?

SpeedFan works good on my new laptop, but I don't know if they have temp probes in there. I know it gets hot.

It's not the performance for RDRAM (which is quite good actully) it's the cost. A gig of the stuff costs the same as gold per ounce. My annoyance is that my wife's machine uses the stuff and she's trying to get me to upgrade the memory.

Yeah I understand that. That is why I don't like it either.

And you can't reuse it again like you might have been able too if it were normal memory.

I hope you talked her out of it. Unless you can find it cheap somewhere.

the temp probes are for a front display on the case, I can find out the CPU temp through a program that came with the driver CD for the motherboard, but the front display is fun and I plan on uninstalling the motherboard program anyway because I never use it..

there are 3 temp probes the front display has, CPU, VGA and HD, right now I have the HD one on the bottom of the HD, the VGA one is on my heatsink of the VGA and the CPU is on the bottom of the stock heatsink I have.. but I want to get it closer to the processor if possible and I figured I'd deal with it when I got a different heatsink

The thermal grease is there to bridge the gap between the CPU and the heatsink already to insure good heat transfer. So I don't think putting the probe wires in that spot would be a good idea. JMHO.

What case did you buy?

how is that heatsink?

Really really good. CPU temps stay very low even on a full load. I was really surprised at the performance. And for $34.00 you cant beat it. The only thing I think you have to watch out for is that it is relatively tall. So if your case has a side fan in that position or is too small probably wont fit. Very Quiet too.

Here is the case i bought: (for $92.00 now it is 105.00!!)

Yea, Newegg always has really good sales from time to time depending on what your looking for. Plus shippping is always super fast. I have been a satisfied newegg customer for quite some time now and have no complaints.

Broadway case, the ratings are bad on it but I like the looks of it, so I went for it anyway.. I'm pleased with it, it came with a crack in the bottom part where the front ports are, but you can't see it really and they're still usable.. the front panel is nice too as long as you're not sitting lower than your computer.. and the CD doors / front USB port door that come with it are real cheap, but I don't use them anyway.. overall it's definately worth 46 dollars even if it did come cracked

I just googled the temp probe thing too.. the only way you can put a temp probe between the CPU and Heatsink is if your heatsink is notched out for it.. I guess some people cut them in themselves and some heatsinks come with it notched already.. I won't be doing any cutting, so I'll just put the probe on the heatsink somewhere if it's not cut

KandCorp - Good case. I have seen this given good reviews in several places.

RiverTruss - You can't beat that deal. A case with a 450 watt power supply.

I have been reviewing cases that Maximum PC has reviewed but haven't made up my mind yet. They are all better than my dell case for storing more drives.

That new one from Thermaltake, Tai Chi I think, weighs 40lbs. No thanks.

River,

I bought that same exact case for a custom built PC for my borther. I am really satisfied with it. The only thing that never worked for me is the 2 tube lights going up the sides, but oh well its all for looks. Cant beat it for the price though.

I only hooked up the GPU and the HDD probes. I dont mess with CPU probes as they give an uneven contact between sink and cpu. Just use the MOBO utility form manufacturer.

Oh, and as long as we are talking about PC cases and stuff here is my dream:

http://www.frozencpu.com/cas-193.html

Havent got the nerve to spend the $900 yet

AHH!! THE TWO TUBE LIGHTS!

they drove me nuts for two weeks, I couldn't figure it out.. but when I tell you, you're probably going to kick yourself, or just chuckle for the lack of instructions broadway provides for their cases.. on the front USB/Firewire panel, press the button that's on the left.... there you go

I could never spend 900 on a case, no matter how cool it kept my CPU, I guess I'll stick to the basic cases..

I like thermaltake cases a lot but I know after about a week I'd get fed up with the door thing that's on it covering the CD-Rom drives and rip it off.. I don't like things covering my CD drives, I want to get 2 slot load DVD-Burners in my comp. but they're PRICEY compaired to a reg DVD-Burner or DVD-Rom.. I guess I'll have to wait

KandCorp,

Looks like you might be an overclocker if you want a case like that?

You could really overclock with that case. For $900 though you could buy a more powerful CPU and fan. But if that is what you like I say treat yourself when the time is right.

River, I am with you on those covers, I don't like them. I want access not a piece of furniture. I didn't quite get the double disk loading thing. Could this not be accomplished by just buying another DVD burner. If you don't have room in the case buy an external enclosure and use your USB or firewire to hook it to your computer.

Riv,

I will try that out tonight and kick myself if it works

And Jasp,

You are probably right. I think if I have $900.00 to spend on PC parts I would probably just get a new CPU and a Water Cooler. Yes, I like overclocking from time to time to see the limits of my hardware.

Lets see $900.00

- http://www.frozencpu.com/ex-wat-66.html = $280.00

- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819116211 =$548.00

Total: $828.00
