Axis P3364-LVE 6mm or 12mm cameras?

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

This is probably a "how long is a piece of string" kind of question, but here it goes...

I am looking at installing some IP cameras around my house - my first venture into security cameras! I am considering the Axis P3364-LVE series, as they appear to be good quality, reasonably discrete, and also include IR illumination. I am looking at having one camera on the eave outside the garage door, and two more monitoring the backyard. I am unsure whether the 6mm or 12mm version would be more suitable?

From reading other threads, it seems that the 12mm may be most suitable for the driveway (since it's a reasonably narrow field of view, and will allow me to identify plates on vehicles). How about the backyard cameras? I would ideally like those cameras to have around a 90 degree field of view, since they will be mounted on the outside corner of the house.

Even better, does anyone have sample pictures or footage from each version? I have seen 12mm sample pictures, but no 6mm samples.

Cheers!

4mm is about 75 degrees, so if you want close to 90 degrees you probably something around 3mm or less.

6mm is about 50 degrees.

12mm is about 23 degrees.

(at least on the Hikvision cameras I looked at.)

There are some very good sample images and videos on the Axis website, and if you type most models into youtube you an find sample images from a TON of cameras.

The lenses are not 6mm and 12mm, it's just the max. Unless you need the very wide 2.5mm, I would get the 3.3-12mm version. 3.3 is pretty wide and width only 1MP of resolution 2.5mm may be too wide.

AXIS P3363-VE/P3364-VE/P3364–LVE 6 mm: 2.5–6 mm, 105°–49° view, F1.2

AXIS P3363-VE/P3364-VE/P3364-LVE 12 mm: 3.3–12 mm, 82°–24° view, F1.4

Good information.

I couldn't get my boss to understand that. He kept arguing with me that the 3364-LVE 6MM was a fixed lens.
