Struggling with SWNHD-820CAM / please help.

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I purchased SWNHD-820CAM IP Camera and received it today, it did not come with any detailed manual and to be honest, I am a little pissed.

I have been googling about it and there are some questions I cannot find the right answer and I was wondering if you guys can help:

1. How do I configure the freaking thing? I did not use the PoE since I had an regular power adapter that can work with it, I plugged it in, now what? do I need to plug it to the PC directly with the LAN as well?

2. I have been reading about NVR, do I must have NVR to be able to view my footage? I have a PC I can dedicate to it and record the video, can I use iSpy instead of buying an NVR??? if not what is the cheapest one you guys recommend?

3. How do I configure the IP of the camera? how does it connect to the wifi?

Thanks,

Kelso

check out:-

this will give you the default ip info of the camera etc.

if its just 1 camera and your hard drive is large enough to cope with hd images being continually recorded then you don't need a dvr- you can use your pc as the recorder but you will need some software to manage the recording /play back etc.

sure google will help you out in that department.

Thank you for your reply, I have seen this video at least 20 times in the past 24 hours.

I purchased a PoE injector today (hoping that this will solve my problem)

connected the data+power side to the camera, the other side to the router (Xfinity) and saw the IR lights of the camera turn on... I can see that in the router configuration it shows port 1 as active which is where I connected the PoE, I changed my IP settings in the router to have my local network as 192.0.0.X, received an IP of 192.0.0.9 but still get no response from 192.0.0.64 via ping or http.

* There is no firewall involved, everything is shutdown.

* I tried replacing the network cables (tried 5 of them) all the same problem.

* I did arp -a, cant find anything new or anything with that IP.

* I used NMAP to scan my network and it did not discover any new IPs.

* I tried to restart the router, changing ports.

I really dont know what else to do.

perhaps the camera I purchased is defected? I received it from eBay as a refurbished camera and still have 20 days left to return it.

One thing I have spotted- while doing ping -t 192.0.0.6 if I unplug the network cable connected from the camera to the PoE and re-plug it, I get 3 replied from 192.0.0.64 but after that it's gone, even if I do it again and again, same behavior.

I dont know what else to do, please advise.

Thanks,

so you still don't know for sure the Ip address of the camera- it could have been changed - is this right ?

if so.

to find the ip address you can download wireshark- free Ethernet logging program,

running this will capture all the data packets between your laptop/pc and the camera.

by running the program and the n powering up the camera you should see lots of data lines, you want to look for a BROADCAST followed by an IP address and a gateway. This is the camera asking for info on what its connected to so you may see something like

BROADCAST who has 10.10.10.1 tell tell 10.10.10.50

the .1 is the gateway and the .50 is the device

so 10.10.10.50 would be the camera and its gateway for communicating is 10.10.10.1

see:

for a guy doing this to find ip address of camera.

You will now know for sure its IP address and can then set your laptop to the same range and then hopefully connect to the camera.

HI if 192.0.0.64 is your camera ip address you may need to put in the gateway as well- I had trouble with this scenario before - when I entered the gateway it loaded up in the web browser- also had windows 7 fail to run the web connection but on xp it loaded fine.

jazzar, I scanned the network already and found nothing new, maybe there is an issue with the xfinity router.

I will try wireshark.

Ok, I unplugged the PoE injector from the router, plugged it directly to my pc and disabled all other ether-nets.

I ran wire-shark to look for any broadcast message from the camera to find the IP, but I haven't seen any broadcast message.

I assume the camera is defected. if anyone have any other suggestions let me know.

I have been messaging with the seller and he said -

"I think you have the wrong camera. The camera you have is made to go with the 7200 series DVR. You should look into stand alone IP cameras such as the 445 pan tilt camera or the 455 camera series. I have both"

he is wrong about the fact that it can only work with DVR, correct? it can\should work in the current configuration, just not plug-n-play, correct?

Not sure if you need a cross over cable when connecting direct to the camera without the router. the new ip kit autodetects and will establish comms anyway. - the older ones may need a crossover cable - you could try crossover cable.

Anyway

if you put the system together when you were able to see the 192.0.0.64 via the router and you can ping it then try running wireshark while you power up the camera and see if you can see a BROADCAST from 192.0.0.64 and see if you can find the gateway, if you find the gateway try putting this into your laptops settings- then try connecting with web browser.

You could also do arp -a instead of ping this will give you the 6 double digit codes along side 192.0.0.64, the first three sets are the manufacturer code, the next 3 sets are the exact device.

Google the codes and you should identify the make and model of the camera.

if 192.0.0.64 is the camera and its not showing up messages on wireshark then something is wrong-- you should see source info from 192.0.0.64 and also destination to 192.0.0.64 even if you don't get to connect on the web browser you should still see info to and from the device if its communicating but denying you access.

Any messages would be better explained by a network chappy- I am not to up on it.

Ok, I got a new one, connected it to the router, the IP of the camera was 172.16.1.2 (go figure) I found that out by using wireshark, changed my ip to 172.16.1.50 (no gateway) and was able to connect to it!

Thank you all for your help.

I noticed when I use iSpy, I only get up to 10fps, but when I use VLC, I can see smooth video.

Is there better DVR softwares to use? I dont mind paying for a license.

Thanks!

Glad to help.

wireshark is very useful for this kind of problem.

I don't have much experience on the software viewers.
