omgblood 0 Posted July 19, 2014 Sorry if this is in the wrong section. Not sure where else it would go. Anyways, my car gets keyed from time to time. I'm getting fed up with it. It usually happens at work and sometimes I suspect at the gym. I'm looking for to use two cameras, mounted inside the car pointing outwards looking through the windows— front and back with the intent of catching anyone in the act when the occasion arises. Its got to be something I can leave out for at least 8-10 hours as well. Any ideas? Suggestions? Methods? Recommendations for a camera?
buellwinkle 0 Posted July 19, 2014 You can get a battery operated camera like the Brinno MAC200, last a year on 2 batteries, strap it to a tree or pole and it records using it's PIR motion detection and see who's doing it. Also, there's many trail cameras that can serve the same purpose.

buellwinkle 0 Posted July 20, 2014 It's funny you asked because a friend of mine just asked me about the same thing. Someone is scratching his car and wants to put a camera somewhere to see who it is.
cavcom 0 Posted July 21, 2014 What about this record to sd card and it's discreet . http://www.axis.com/products/p12_series/ For power don't they make a solar panel that plugs into cig lighter? Just some ideas If you wanted to watch live you could hook up a craddlepoint 4g router. Good lcuck and if you catch them post the video for us.

Interesting but how could I leave that in my car recording? Haha yes I'll defininently post a vid if I get them. I have at least 3 suspects
StanLee2066 0 Posted July 22, 2014 You can use any IP camera you wish, and even may types of dashcams. The only trick is power. However if you use your vehicle every day you can probably hook-up directly to battery with no drain issues. If you have any concerns, just purchase a separate car/motorcycle battery. Good luck! So I think it looks really good, easy to use and long battery life makes it excellent, however in a review I read it has no night-vision. Which means two things. I need a camera w/ night-vision or park somewhere with some light.
buellwinkle 0 Posted July 22, 2014 The Brinno does not but claims low light performance, the Bushnell Trophy HD does have night vision, IR LEDs and 60' PIR motion range. Both about the same size, different shape.
MaxIcon 0 Posted July 22, 2014 Many dash cams have motion sensors, but you'd want to be careful about not running down your battery while parked. Google dash cam motion sensor and you'll get lots of good stuff on the first page.
omgblood 0 Posted July 24, 2014 I see. I'm about to pull the trigger on that Bushnell, or a dashcam w/ hardwire kit recommend from that dashcam forum. I'm more inclined to go with the Bushnell though, because it's cheaper and requires no wiring. Both should be able to do the same things right? (for my purpose of leaving it on motion detection)
omgblood 0 Posted July 28, 2014 Pulled the trigger on this:http://www.amazon.com/Bushnell-Trophy-Camera-Vision-119576C/dp/B00AU6DZZG Will try it out and order a second one if it works well. Hope to catch these b words in the act. Why is it usually they that do this anyways?
Machineman 0 Posted July 28, 2014 Get the Bushnell. It has invisible IR illumination. If you put all the batteries in it and the sensitivity is set right so it doesn't take 100's of images a day the batteries will last a year! I have one on my property to catch animals. The only issue is some motion blur for fast moving objects at night but most all will do that. I've had a few Moultrie game cams but they failed after about 10mo so now sticking with Bushnell from now on.

Well, I wish you luck... it is questionable though that you will get something actionable with the police unless you are lucky enough to get them in broad daylight and can make some kind of identification. I don't know why people are scumbags. A neighbor called me a few weeks ago because someone had drawn some porn graffiti on the hood of one of their cars with mustard and after washing it off they realized the vinegar in it had etched the paint or clear coat. Even though I had them on video it was night time and you couldn't make facial identification. Some people are just bad apples.... we need some chlorine in the gene pool. omgblood 0 Posted August 4, 2014 Well. I've had the camera for about 3 days. Got to play around with it a bit. Problem: the camera doesn't seem to trigger from motion through glass.. I have the camera setted up by strapping it to the passenger headrest. I have the motion sensitivity on high. Leaving the camera on for 8 hours, away at work, the only footage I get is: be adjusting the camera and turning it on in the beginning and driving in my car. It has never triggered or anything outside the car (glass).

You might have luck sticking a separate sensor outside the vehicle. Otherwise, your best bet is to use a regular IP camera that uses changes in video frames to detect motion. I believe many cheap dashcams have this ability too.

Unless you live in a apartment complex or HOA It's possible I could strap it to a tree except it would be tedious strapping it on and off for everyday at work (but worth it). Though, I am worried about the camera itself getting stolen. I mean, I don't want anyone to know it's there, so I'd have to set it up and take it out when no ones looking. But setting the camera outside the car would indeed produce the best footage.
omgblood 0 Posted August 6, 2014 Okay. Here is my first trial of leaving the cam outside the car. 4DCJOcxxVww The footage is nice, though, someone parked their car in front of the camera an hour later, blocking some of the view from my car. Most of the footage I got that day were trees moving in the wind, and some people walking by. A concern though is the trigger speed being too slow. Most of the footage I got of people walking by were already like 3/4 quarters past the screen at the :01 second mark of the video. Unless there is another setting to make the trigger speed quicker, the sensor level was on high. And of course, leaving the camera out in the open, I had to check back up on it every so often. I'm going to try and hide it deeper into the bushes next time.
morrisky 0 Posted August 15, 2014 You have any further luck?
buellwinkle 0 Posted August 15, 2014 I tried the Bushnell myself and due to the nature of the beast, being on battery power and turning on only after motion is detected, it's not a typical surveillance camera that has pre-event buffer because the camera is not powered on before the event. What worked best for me was putting it in picture mode. It takes 8MP pictures, 1, 2 or 3 when motion is detected and actually it was good at capturing the subject in the middle of the frame. What does not work is doing both because it doesn't start the video until the picture is taken and stored, so you lose like 3 seconds. When you think about someone messing with your car though, it's not going to be someone just quickly walking by, so I think you'll have to time to see what they are doing even if you miss the first second. In terms of specs, it actually has the fastest trigger speed for a camera of it's type, it's just we are spoiled with IP camera.
