terence8888 0 Posted July 28, 2014 Hello everyone. I'm new here and greetings! I'm looking to upgrade my existing 10 years old CCTV system (analogue camera with DVR). It crashes quite often and is looking a bit long on the tooth. Given that there was an attempted burglary to our house and the next door neighbour got burgled and both cars stolen, this is becoming a bit urgent. The system I have was professionally installed and has coax cables and power cables running to dome cameras. I'm thinking of getting HD SDI cameras and recorders - either DIY install or done professionally. I'm totally confused as to where to start. Should I just spend the money and get a pro to do it (any recommendations?) or go the cheap route and buy the cameras and recorder to fit them myself. If the latter route, which camera and recorder should I get? Any pointers/recommendations will be much welcome! I'm based in London BTW. Cheers!

What is your budget?
milkisbad 0 Posted July 28, 2014 HD SDI is on its way out already, they will release HD TVI soon. For upgrading your options are: HD CVI = cheapest and not bad, made by Dahua HD SDI = not cheap, but very good quality, almost like watching a blu-ray movie. HD TVI = not tested yet lol but suppose to be as good as SDI but can run longer cables and also less expensive. You should do it yourself, unless you are not confident about the labor. terence8888 0 Posted July 29, 2014 Hi, Thanks for the great replies guys! Looking at HD SDI as the coax cables are already in place and it'll be prohibitive to rewire with CAT5 for IP based system. Budget up to 1.5k for DIY. Can you recommend which camera/DVR and where to get them? Never heard of TVI.... will look into it. Any experience with HD SDI to share here will be much appreciated! Securame 0 Posted July 29, 2014 I'd tell you to forget about HDSDI. Go for HDCVI.
terence8888 0 Posted July 29, 2014 Do you know a reliable source where I can get HDCVI stuff?
mgb 0 Posted July 29, 2014 Other alternatives are 1) 960h with 700tvl cameras Still not hd, but fits better in the budget and much better than your current setup. 2) ip cameras with "Ethernet over coax" modules. Of course the modules will add considerably to the cost (altronix modules will cost about $200 per set). It really comes down to what you can't do without balanced to what you can afford. Seems to me, the best route may be to DIY with cat 5 and ip cameras

SunnyKim 2 Posted August 21, 2014 HD-CVI is from Daihua and HD-TVI is from HikVision. They are based on the same category of technology, an extension of traditional TV signal (PAL , NTSC). They just added number of pixels per line and increased the number of lines, so carrying much higher frequency component than PAL or NTSC. The fact is that they both suffer high frequency loss or video sync signal loss, a lot more than PAL or NTSC, if used on a regular cable. They may need a very good quality cable for a longer distance, say, 50 meter above. Another issue is that you have to buy HD-CVI camera and HD-CVI DVR as a pair set, for compatibility. Daihua does not sell receiver chipset for DVR on the open market. HD-TVI from Hikvision would do the same. The both party do not compromise each other. They both aim to monopolize the CCTV market. Nightmare for the end customers or middle players, in the end. Both technology is not matured yet but would not be at all, but I keep watching how they would go. HD-SDI is designed for broad casting studio. The technology is based on SerDes using Giga hertz carrier. CCTV industry just adopts the chip sets for sending HD video data from HD camera. It also suffers video loss, in case over 100 meter, on a regular cable, because of its inherent high frequency component. HD-IP sends video stream file after compressing the HD video data on a LAN cable. Just as in internet, a bit loss in transit could result in video loss 2 or 3 sec duration. Another shortcoming comes for a rather long time delay, because the compressed bit stream should be buffered and decompressed for being displayed.
milkisbad 0 Posted August 22, 2014 Just saw some Hikvision HD TVI demo in person today, quality is 99% like HD SDI but the colors weren't as rich. but it gave a solid signal through a spool of 1000 ft of good RG 59 and local power adapter. Night time weren't as noisy as HD SDI also. Also the camera had a regular BNC output for using traditional tester.
