ip surveillance network design

Recommended Posts

I'm designing a surveillance system for a new home.

My design requirements are as follows :

1. 8 channel nvr with option to extend to 16 ch

2. minimise network traffic on router

3. use POE cameras

4. Keep POE switch as separate device from NVR (as recommended on this forum)

5. Option to plug in additional alarm devices to the NVR or camera

Here's my question:

If my NVR is connected via its LAN connection to my router what do I plug my switch into ?

Should I buy an NVR with a few POE ports and plug the switch into that?

(Most NVR's seen to have either (i) one LAN port and no other network ports or (ii) the one LAN port with multiple POE ports for cameras.). I'm assuming that to avoid unnecessary traffic on the router l will need to make 2 subnets -one for the surveillance and one for the home / office.

If anyone could draw me a network diagram l would be grateful.

Regards

Greets aggierockdoc from Okrahoma.

I'm not sure why #4 has been recommended (fail safe?) but it will interfere with #2 on a Hikvision NVR network as most of the traffic seems to take place on the NVR's separate POE connected subnet.

Here's my question:

If my NVR is connected via its LAN connection to my router what do I plug my switch into ?

Which switch are you referring to?

Much of this is going to revolve around your NVR and how it's set up.

If anyone could draw me a network diagram...

This is kind of how I have the Hikvision NVR set up.

It connects to a gigabit switch as well as has a loop back from the NVR POE ports into the gigabit switch in order to port the cameras over to my local LAN subnet. In my case the gigabit switch is connected to my firewall which is then connected to my modem.

FWIW, if you are getting the Hikvision NVR the newer firmware 2.39 has implemented a virtual host which should get around the the loop back and free up the used POE port.

/Texas, the same as Oklahoma only bigger.
