Purpose of motion detection in Effio-E camera's

What is the purpose of motion detection in the OSD for the Sony CCD cameras? I am assuming that my DVR actually does the motion detection for recording. I have it off on my cameras and my DVR records on motion fine, I guess I'm not really sure what the purpose of enabling it at the camera would be.
