Must register your cameras with local police- thoughts?

Recommended Posts

"Law enforcement and sponsors of the bill said the measure has nothing to do with privacy and is all about saving lives."

- That's how it always goes. At least they're being honest in their own perverted way. Obviously, the bill raises privacy issues but if the lawmakers say they didn't consider it that way, it must be so, right?

The insidious usurping of citizens' rights in the name of security will continue until it suddenly dawns on the mostly-ignorant public that they have allowed Big Brother complete control over almost every aspect of their lives. By then, it will be too late for any peaceful solution. Thankfully, at my age I will likely not be around when the poo hits the fan...

This is more if NYC mentality of protecting everyone from themselves like no salt allowed in food at NYC restaurants. What they likely want is a list of cameras they can tap if there's a crime in your area. I personally love the idea and have cooperated with the Po in cases where nearby homes were robbed. The privacy concern could be say as evidence in a civil matter, like a divorce where a video is taken out of context to further a personal agenda.

@*#( no.

How can they think that is possibly a good idea. Cameras are already so easy to see there is little time lost canvasing a neighborhood, not to mention most people are perfectly content if they hear of something on the news to see if they captured any of it.

That said, I'd be perfectly happy to register my cams if the local police will refund me their purchase and ongoing maintenance, and even then it needs to be optional.

My prediction is this goes nowhere and, even if it becomes law, it will be possible to strike it down.

I can see them passing something where commercial cameras are optional to be registered, but not private ones. I'm in CT and some cities here have a similar law in the books, but is not a "forced" registration, is actually optional, and for their trouble they get a small tax break and the peace of mind that it comes knowing that at any given time the police are watching your property (at least that's their mindset). Mostly business owners take advantage of this, while very few private residences take part of this program.

I dunno, the way this country has been going for a while with this socialist like movement, it wouldn't surprise me that more and more states are going to use their powers to gain access to people's personal lives under the pretext of security.

Let's see where this goes

That's more than just letting the local PD know you have cameras. That's giving direct viewing access and I don't care who it is, PD or not, I would never give direct access. No way, no how.

This is a big issue. It seems like this registration should be voluntary to assist imvestigators with camera locations near crime scenes yet it has gone too far. Mandatory? No way never happen. Then having to tell how many cams you have and where they are. If this legislation passes whats next?

i think this is a very good idea. if the police need a copy of footage from my system a crime number has to be given to me which ill record in my log book, when the police come for the footage the log book is filled in the copied disc is sealed with a serial number and that in turn is logged in book and the officer signs to say which police station it has gone to. When the disc is returned if im told its no longer required ill snap the disc in front of the police so they can see the information is detsroyed and the disc is signed back in as destroyed if nfa

Haven't you ever watched 24? CTU already has the ability to remotely tap into any CCTV camera anywhere in the country.

What kinds of fines and penalties are people going to incur who don't keep their systems in 100% working order, or who forget to update their information with the state?

It's a nice a thought if we play pretend for a moment, but it's just going to open the door to another controversy.

This is the same conversation people have been having for decades about registering firearms.

I wouldn't mind registering if it meant that the cops knew they were there and could come knocking on my door, if it helped in a specific crime. I would NOT register if it meant handing over log in info so they can log in whenever they feel like it
