Wired, Then the World Passed Me By??

Recommended Posts

So I had big plans to install a 4 channel exterior system 2.5yrs ago, and made 4 long pulls of "Siamese" coax/power cables from my home gateway area to 4 points in my soffits.

Now it appears the IP/NVR is the way to go and they use cat6. I don't think I have the time to pull cat6, as much of the run goes behind drywall and painted trim.

Can I still use newer tech, or am I confined to analog systems?

Budget <$1000

Doubtful I'd Expand Past 4 Points

Need Remote Monitoring/Alerts

Would like to see a stream of "events" that triggered any motion. I have a couple nosy neighbors, one with dementia, one demented.

Thanks in advance! I feel like I'm back to the drawing board with the IP tech.

You can run ethernet over coax adapters, but it will cost you.. See this post viewtopic.php?f=19&t=44014&p=261844&hilit=coax#p261844

Alternatively look into SDI, CVI, TVI systems, they allow hd over coax..wont be ip but you will get decent images...

Finally, you can pay a pro to fish the cable...they are very good and can do it with minimal to zero damage..you may even be able to pull the ethernet by using the coax as a pull string..depends on how you installed.

P.S. - When I saw the title to this thread, I almost fell off my chair laughing (nothing personal). I can't tell you how many times I've heard something like this from people. Two and half years ago, I would have been the jerk telling you to run Siamese (RG59). It's amazing how much can change in as little as six months; there's really nothing you can do about it. You can buy top of the line today, and within 12 months it can become an antique.

I hear ya. IMO we won't live here more than 5yrs, so economics and deterrence may be the driving factors. I like the idea on HD-CVI best of those presented. Affordable, and better than base analog.

Any suggestions on kits? I know nobody here loves a kit, but I'm not sure I have lofty goals. I would like a decent interface, and easy web/phone access.

This is ultra cheap. Issues?

Kits are fine...You just need to know what you are buying..

I have no direct experience with cvi...but this looks like a decent kit, its cheaper than the amazon unit and it comes with a hard drive (the other doesnt). also, since its from costco, you can return it anytime if it fails..

boogieman, I really like your suggestion of CVI/HDCVI. Seems to be the best option for someone looking to use existing wiring and still get a 720/1080p picture.

Now my question is which direction to go with HDCVI, or if (as the link suggested) I'm just better off giving up the resolution for more mature user interfaces and cameras?

I would spend a more for 1080...i dont know really know much about the cvi market...look at the dahua systems...if you want to minimize the cost you will have to buy direct from china via ali express...but you cannot return it and dont get warranties...look around for a us based seller if you are unsure....Just understand that is going to be a lot more than the 269 unit...

Well, I'll probably disappoint and maybe even upgrade later, but wanted to show everyone the courtesy they gave me in helping a newbie by following up.

This ended up becoming a game of compromise, and I wend with a cheaper H960 system off Amazon for a few reasons:

1) It was H960, so relatively high res for analog and my wiring.

2) HD CVI seemed like a niche market, where I'd be all alone with any issues

3) 4 channel HD CVI would be double the price of H960 AND be an off brand vs Q-See.

4) I can return to Amazon or upgrade later and be out very little if I feel the need.

5) Amazon clearly sells a ton of these, so issues should be known.

I guess that is not a bad choice..but i dont see how its cheaper than cvi..the 4 channel 720p from costco is 269 vs 399 for the amazon unit.

With costco you can bring it back anytime..if you have an issue with the amazon unit you only have 30 days..i dont see how you can upgrade and be out very little..

Dang, I misread the costco one as being standard def bc I didn't see the HD CVI markings....newbie error

FWIW, the unit I purchased was the 4 camera $211 one, but for $50 more I may take a look at that costco unit.
