I have a stalker and I need help

Recommended Posts

I have a protection order against my ex because he nearly killed me. I know he has been breaking into my garage and messing with my stuff (the protection order says he can't be on the property) and doing things like taking a bowel movement in the middle of the floor. I've contacted the police, but they can't prove it's him.

I don't have electricity hooked up in my garage. Is there some sort or motion detection camera that runs on batteries that can be easily hidden and maybe send a notification to my phone or something when it's set off? Or something I can check on and download or switch out an SD card once a week or so? The police department told me it would need to have a date and time stamp. I looked into trail cameras, but they all seem big and have a light on them. I don't have much money, but I'm tired in living in fear. I'm in the US. Please help.

Tell them to take a dna sample...

While wifi battery cameras are generally not recommended for your purpose it will work

http://www.amazon.com/NETGEAR-VueZone-Wire-free-Monitoring-VZSM2200-200NAS/dp/B00IVEHFS2/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1428117303&sr=8-3&keywords=netgear+wifi+camera

or this is much cheaper but larger

Unfortunately DNA sampling for stalking matters is well beyond the resources of many small Police Forces in the US. Even if they had the money, her ex would need to have a comparison sample on file.

Skindeles have you considered something like a motion activated nanny cam?

What will work perfect for your situation is a hunting camera. They are typically battery operated, have night vision, are motion based, and do have time and date stamping as well as still and video clips. Just be sure to retrieve the data every once in a while (probably after the garage was messed with. If he's not intelligent, he won't find it and you'll have all the evidence you need.

Otherwise, get some skunks and put them in the garage. Sure, it will possibly mess up your stuff, but would mess him up pretty good. A raccoon or two could probably be just as effective.

DNA match of dog poop is quite common and relatively inexpensive. These services are available to catch dog owners who don't clean up after their pets. It could easily be done for humans as well. You would still need a cheek swab, but cost is not an issue.

Interesting and good to know.

Videofied is not a good solution for the OP. Its cool and useful but not in this case.

OP says that, she does not have much money.

If they can dispatch the police when something is happening and provide video proof--that's solid enough evidence for legal action--which is what the OP needs. There will be a cost to any solution for this problem. It is not likely such a solution will come for free.

True, but its simply not an option for someone who cannot afford it...a hired security guard is also a great option but its simply not feasible. Its extremely expensive. A photo/video from a wildlife cam will be sufficient.

Wildlife cams are going to be $150+. Is the video service more than that? (I didn't check pricing.)

First a wildlife camera is only 50

http://www.amazon.com/Moultrie-Low-Glow-Game-Camera/dp/B00AP311JQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1428357344&sr=8-1&keywords=wildlife+camera

Second, I believe the monitoring is about 35 dollars a month for limited basic service (limited video) also you need to pay for the cell service on the sim card - monthly...more importantly the equipment is likely to cost 500-1000...

I was looking at cameras that could do video since that would be irrefutable evidence. That's not bad for the monthly service, but if that doesn't include the camera, then it's going to be too much like you said.

That is for a very basic service with like 10 videos a month...the unlimited is at least 100 a month...this type of tech is useful for places like car lots or warehouses where a video will net quick response..not really suitable or viable for home use...

Yikes, that's pretty high for an individual.

Sorry! I didn't mean to start an argument.

I spoke with the Police about DNA, but they advised it is costly for their department, would take about 6 months to get back, and that he would need to provide a sample, which he is not willing to do.

I should have noted that my garage does not have electricity, so I would probably need something battery operated. I am willing to buy a prepaid plan on a mobile hot spot. I am really liking the hunting camera idea. Are they pretty discreet?

I got to the point I had to go live in a safe house. I just can't sleep in my own house. I'm just too scared. A neighbor had some "dummy cameras" and he hung 3 of them up on the property. They have a red light, but they don't record anything. It's just to keep him out of the house. I don't know if it has worked or not, because I haven't been to the house since I wrote the original post.

Any more suggestions on hunting type cameras? I've found a few online, but I honestly don't know what I'm looking for.

Yes this is the camera you need to get based on your posts and was suggested earlier... http://www.amazon.com/Moultrie-Low-Glow-Game-Camera/dp/B00AP311JQ/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1428710069&sr=8-1&keywords=wildlife+camera

You will also need to get an sd card.

If you had 1000+ to spend you would have other options.

What are you waiting for?

I would not recommend this model. The glowing IRs can give the camera away, and since it's battery operated and portable, it could just be taken and there goes your evidence.

In some quick searches, I found several models that are better equipped for the task and also have video and timestamping options which will provide further evidence that the police could investigate:

I would not recommend one of these because they're typically designed for talk back and baby usage, so they're pretty conspicuous. The wildlife/game camera would be a much better device for your application, and has been used to catch thieves/prowlers/etc.

Not sure why you think that the cameras you listed are any better....they have the same "low glow" ir light..none of them list specifications so its unclear if they are 940nm vs 850...there is not reason for her to spend the extra money....

The one i linked to has "Moon phase, time, date and camera ID stamp"

Please read specs before making recommendations.

Also consider that the poster is on a limited budget.

Its easy to put this camera on a shelf without being noticed...intruders do most often do not even notice cameras particularity one like this that is a non traditional design.

Please provide one reason why any of the cameras you listed are better?

The no glow 170 dollar primus has issues with close objects being washed out which is an issue here.

From a review.

"Night pictures have an overwhelming flash. For a no glow camera trap, the flash range is outstanding. We rate it at 60 feet but there are nights it will go further. The downside to this flash is the white-out potential. Anything close will get smothered in white-out and we have also experienced a decent amount of blurry animals when there is movement."

A 50 dollar unit will be just fine.

I must have posted the wrong links. The same site has a separate section for blackout cameras. I wouldn't use a low-glow in this situation. It will and can be noticed, thereby defeating the whole purpose. Plus, if the camera is stolen, that's money that the OP is out of.
