Access to DS2 through Serial Port (HyperT)

Guys. I'm opening myself to be blasted here (I know!!)...

 

Just bought a used DM DS2 which is my very 1st piece of cctv.The intention is to then get cameras, cable etc...but here's the question:-

 

Can I check, as a minimum, that I can get connected to this unit through Ethernet(without having a monitor!!)? I don't know the IP, it doesn't appear to be DHCP enabled as I've done a port scan so thinking it's got a static. I've been in touch with the seller who doesn't know.

 

So, after research I've got as far as getting limited response through the serial (debug) connector using HyperTerminal.

 

When I connect and do the ESC*3 I then see

'Monitor Starting Channel 0'

 

I then type +++ and get 'Not logged in'

So I try 'login admin admin' and get 'Invalid login'

 

The screen sits at *> (and is waiting for command)

 

...and that's where I'm at. Is there anything I can do or do I really need to get a monitor on the MON connector as a starting point? I guess even if I do then the next question might still be about login?

Ok, I eventually figured this out but did a bunch of other stuff too. Job done so just in case you've been worrying over this! Please don't.
